New Banana Chick: transplanting advice?

:sumbrero:

Hi Everyone -

This is Gail the Pond Plant Girl and I'm just starting out growing banana trees. Right now I have the Chaqueta variety. I tried transplanting 4 8" plants and they quickly turned brown! I've been keeping them in the shade and they look like they will survive.

Advice please! What is the best way to dig up banana pups and then transplant them into a new container?

GARDEN BLESSINGS,

GAiL

photos of the plants would help us see what may be wrong with the plants. Judging by the fact that the plants are all about 8" I would guess that they are tissue cultured plants. Cultured plants are very sensitive to sun, so you have to gradually harden them off until they can handle full brightness. You should pot them into a very well draining soil and only water them lightly until they start to show signs of vigorous growth. Hold off on the fertilizer until they are growing well.

Welcome to the .org, feel free to read the posts and ask lots of questions. Everyone here is very helpful.

Welcome to the site, Gail! I've totally seen some of your videos on YouTube....first one I found was, ironically enough, about bananas! Hope you enjoy the site...this place has a lot to offer.

Welcome Pondplantgirl! Here's my advice....the pups of a banana plant are essentially clones of the mother plant, and share all the characteristics and the initial root system of that plant. So, if you can think of the pups as something like corms or bulbs, you have to give them some time to establish their own root systems before separating them from the mother.Don't be in too much of a hurry to expand your grove until the pup is showing strong, vigorous growth,as tempting as that can be. Then, pick a good site, wait for a cool-ish day, and transplant the pup to a well prepared and watered site. I always like to pot on plants once or twice before planting out in the yard, just so you can monitor and adjust that important early growth of a strong independent root system. Hope this :08:helps...or generates some additional input from someone.

Actually, the video helped me to figure out how to divide my giant black taro!

The Cali-gold grows very well and faster than Chiquita / Gran nain. :^) Only thing faster in growth I've seen than a Cali-gold is the Dwarf Orinoco, Texas Star and Veinte Cohol.
