Namwah or Mysore?

Hi all,

I am thinking about purchasing a dessert banana plant.

I am concerned about the high winds we get in Southern California, known as the Santa Ana winds. We can get gusts of 80mph or more.

After looking over Encanto Farms website, I am thinking about a Dwarf Namwah plant which is one of the best rated for taste. I am not sure if it will stand up to the winds or not.

Another choice is Mysore which reads “The root system on this banana is so strong that it never blows over from high winds.” However the banana has a slightly acid flavor which I am not sure if I will like.

Any opinions?

Welcome PJ!
If you want a more of the dessert type banana, the Namwa and Mysore are certainly good choices. If you are convinced that they are sturdy enough to withstand the winds in your area, either one will be great. The "slightly acid taste" of the Mysore is not as strong as you would expect. It is a Lady Finger type banana, and these types of bananas are generally sweeter than the grocery types. And much much less acid than the Manzano. If you are that concerned about the acidity, go for the Dwarf Namwa. Its compact stature will probably withstand the winds than the Mysore which grows upwards of 15-feet, to the D. Namwa's 8-foot.

Another dwarf growing banana is the Zan Moreno. It has a very stout trunk and only grows to 7-8 feet.

If you live close to Encanto Farms, give Jon a call or PM him for advice on these choices. Or for that matter, ask him for advice on what you can do to prtect your plants from the high winds.

Hey, I just found this post sorry I missed it. I live in southern california not too far from Tustin and I am currently eating the fruit off of my Mysore. We are also experiencing santa ana conditions so this post is perfect.

Anyway, I LOVE my Mysore. It seems to be very hardy. It gave me a great bunch of fruit and grew very quickly. It has had so many little pups sprout off I am going to have so much fruit this next season. Anyway, just wanted to chime in. I love my Mysore! I also purchased a Gluay (sp?) Namwah from Encanto Farms but I haven't gotten fruit from it yet. It is a beautiful plant and Jon has great stuff. Whatever you get it's worth the drive especially since your only in Tustin. Anyway, good luck and I don't think you can go wrong either way.
