Default My first bananas in zone 8...

Hi, My name is Susan and I live in Hull, Georgia about 5 minutes from Athens. I'm so excited about my banana tree and my very first bananas. I planted this dwarf tree last year and it made it through the winter fine. It's August 1, today and about a week ago I spotted the little bananas.
I bought a large cold hardy at the same time and thought I had the dwarf in the greenhouse but discovered it was the large plant. Almost took the top out of the greenhouse it grew so big. I had to keep cutting the leaves during the winter so it would fit. I moved the big one outside this spring and no bananas on it, maybe next year.
Looking forward to learning from your stories.
Oh yes, we are officially zone 8 now. We were 7.

Welcome! I'm also in zone 8, and get pretty excited when I see fellow banana growers in the same zone as I. How tall is your greenhouse? Some dwarf bananas don't get too big, some get, well, not so "dwarf" in height.

Hi Illia,
The greenhouse I had the tree in is 8 feet tall. I made a mistake when I got them in the mail and instead of putting the dwarf Cavendish in the greenhouse I put the huge musa cold hardy in there. Planted it in the ground. The dwarf Cavendish stayed outside in the ground and did just fine. We did have a mild winter and now they are both outside and along with the Lotus banana I have them all up against a privacy fence and facing my house. For the last 20 years I've been selling pond plants and now am taking up my ponds and planting fruit trees. The pond plants are going in tubs on shelves my hubby made. We're trying to rid our place of snakes. We're on a creek and I guess I've made a wonderful habitat for our slithery friends. Yesterday I saved one of my bigger goldfish from a new breed of snake we've not seen around here. He jumped out of the pond with the fish in his mouth and luckily I was looking out my kitchen window and saw the flash of gold. Got my snake catcher and grabbed the snake and the fish popped out. I put the fish back in the pond and he swam off. I have one greenhouse with nothing but pond plants. I love this site and have already learned so much about bananas. I'm trying to figure out how to share my photos. Thank you so much and love this new zone 8. We've always been zone 7.
Susan
