Hi,

First post BTW, I will be moving soon and I dug up my musa basjoo to take with me. My question is what do you think the latest I can plant the basjoo back in the ground without losing it? the avg. first frost is Oct. 30th

Staying in york, I was originally going to leave them for the next homeowner but they then decided they were to big and i don't want have plants thrown out. There are 2 of them( not a big clump) and they are in 2 30 gallon pots. They are doing fine but they may not be able to go back in the ground until august or september.

They should be good to go. I planted some(not Basjoos) at the end of October last year and we had a hard freeze 3 weeks later and mine are fine now.

Do they still play that piped in music in downtown York?
Is that cafe still there that served the buttermilk pie? I cannot recall the name.

as to the music and pie, yes they do play the music but not right now do to renovations on some of the older buildings. as to the pie, yes, but they moved just outside of downtown to a larger spot. its popular so they need it.

In my experience, Spring is the best time to plant any banana. As early as possible, after the temperatures no longer go below 50°F. That way it will be absorbing as much energy as it can, over a longer period of time before they go back into dormancy. So, if the place you're going to doesn't experience temperatures below 50°F, now is the time to plant you bananas.

Here in the NW, it isn't that easy to predict, so right now, my plants are still in the greenhouse. I will be moving some of them out sometime this week, though. Just to figure out my loses.

Also, if I can find some time, I'd like to plant some bananas outside soon because I won't have time to them after I return to work. All of the potential job offers that I'm expecting are out of state, with the exception of one which is in-state but 68 miles away. I would probably rent a room or studio apt. if I were to accept that one. I don't like long commutes.

Theses are to good sized basjoos(my back knows they are) What I am now thinking of doing is planting one whenever i get settled and store one. Last winter we got to 10 degrees once and they survived with no cover whatsoever.
