Default Just joined up - but I have no bananananas

Well I thought it was just gimmicky name for a garden site
Now I know its not
I posted about the gereenhouse I just completed for less then $30
It's 7x10 - forgot to mention that in the thread
In front of it I have a 10x14 raised garden
Down by a stream I have a 25x30 garden area

Sort of a cold climate, but I expect the greenhouse to extend my season by a lot. I'm also working on more cold frames for the rest of the gardens. I pick up a lot of my material off craigslist

I'm into Vegie gardens & perennials
I actually have done so well on perennials that I now weed them
I had a wheelbarrow full of black eyed susans that most I just dumped in the dirt in a side area
I also have hundreds of Rose O Sharon Trees/bushes growing
That's in addition to about 100 on my 1/2 acre
And about another 100 trees growing different species:
4 Sequoia, 4 Dawn redwood, 6+ cherry trees, 16 birches, 4 redbud, 3 dogwood, 4 buttonwood (sycamore), plum tree, 7 apple trees, 5 quaking aspen, 1 red leaf birch + more

And I planted over 6000 fall bulbs around the property

So I may need to try some banana
I do have some hardy kiwis growing - no fruit yet

Which kiwis? (I used to be Northern Canadian, and I had great success with 'Issai' in zone 2)

Welcome to another diver! I've got basic and rescue, and am working up the levels slowly but slowly. It helps that I live in the tropics, though.

I dive also, I'm Rescue and Master scuba diver with Padi, Full cave certified with NSS-CDS, and Advanced Trimix to 330' with TDI. I've been diving since 1978.

I like growing bananas also. How large are your Dawn Redwoods and Sequoia?

Safe diving, good growing, and welcome to the organization!!!

Welcome Dave, it sounds like one heck of a half acre! You're in a good position as you can research what's right for you instead of mostly trial and error. Are you looking for hardy , ornamental or edible bananas? You have the luxury here of reading up and then making your decision. Good luck.

I'm looking for hardy & edible
I'll need to look into MAX sizes too
I can't imagine an 18' tall banana tree!!
I just mentioned the site & growing banana's to the wife
She said that would be neat!!
So I have a green light

I'm not sure what version of kiwi - they were advertised as hardy & the vines have survied 3-4 years now, They were moved after the 1st year, so lost some root growth. I had no idea they would grow so fast
Ah, I found my orde rin my E-mail: Item #5937 Actinindia arguta
From eburgess.com May of '06, so this is the 2nd year after transplant. I'll have to see if they flower this year

I'm also PADI, Master & Rescue
I think the Rescue course was an excellent course
I have done a cavern dive, my Instructor is Cave certied
Also some wrecks in the Carribbean
Wife dives too - she's not into the wrecks so much
These were wide open wrecks, mostly around them
We do a FYAO Dive (Freeze Yer A Off) every year in Feb
One week later I was in Cozumel
The rental guy asked the last time I dove, "Last week"
'"Oh I didn't know you were here last week"
Me: We weren't - we were diving back home"
He asked the water Temp - I said just above freezing - he just shuddered

That's me on the far right, and that IS a WET suit!!

Crazy people! I used to do the polar-bear thing in the arctic, and it makes me shiver just thinking aboot it now. Yeeg. I'm a confirmed tropicalist now.

If you protect it really well over the winter (or move it into your greenhouse), you can probably grow an Orinoco. They get big and taste good.

The Dawn Redwoods & Sequoia's were just planted - so only 1-2'
I'm hoping somebody 100 years from now may be cursing me

I'm not a diver(too scared) but love snorkeling, and have on many caribbean islands. just wondering if you have been to Bonaire? hubby and I went there last year on accident! LOVED IT Divers paradise!!!!
Welcome, these nana-heads on here will help you out a lot!! I wouldn't know what species my naners were without them!! im totally a newbie at this!

Hi Dave, I said the same thing too...bigger the better LOL. So I grew a couple Ice Cream. If you hadn't read my posts, I'm having a nightmare now. My IC is big & after moving it back out it is too heavy & big to move back in for cold. DON'T GET A BIG NANA LOL.

Hats off to you Dave! I dive a wet suit only also but the coldest water I can handle and still function is 47 degrees F. When I've gotten into 43F water I feel like I'm at 190' on compressed air (really Narc'ed) and numbed with cold also.

I like Cozumel, Coasta Maya, Belize, especially Turneff Atoll, the Caymans, and Bahamas, the Phillipines, California (but the water is cold), and the Baja coast, and oh yes La Florida mi vida!! In Florida I've Beach, Wreck, Cave, Night, dived as many places as I can and may, from Pensacola, Destin, to Peacock, Little River and Ginney, Diepolder III and Eagles Nest, Paradise Sink, Croaker Hole, Silver Springs (when I was a Lifeguard), Orange Grove (shallow and deep), Manatee springs, The Rocky Horror Tunnel, Jupiter, St.Pete, Naples Spring, Miami, The Keys and a bunch I've not mentioned. It as always is FUN!!!

Best wishes and I hope the Sequoia and Dawn Redwood grow rapidly!!
