I am new to growing plants and new to bananas.org. 3 years ago I was given a plant that had been cut at the ground. I thought it would die but 3 years later I have several plants as tall as 20 ft. I have a bloom! But living in GA, we have a freeze forecast next week. I need advice on how to save the plant and bloom. Can I cut the plant and re-pot inside house?

Congrats on your first bloom.....take photos.

I had a nice bloom with 4 hands last week get a hard frost.......seems black is the new green....got hit real good.

When your plant is in bloom and large it will prove futile to try to save it.
A few of my plants get blooms and small inedible bananas late in the season and by February they are rotting.

You can cut the bud right before the frost and enjoy looking at the bloom like I should have done.

Welcome to the Bunch. What part of Ga do you live? North of Atlanta?

What type of Banana plant do you have? Basjoe & Orinoco should survive in the ground until spring. The freeze will cause the pstem to die back to the ground. The Plant with the bloom if in a pot can be moved inside if not too tall. If you cut the plant, you will cut the bloom off. It wont grow back. ... Outside the bloom and pstem will die when it freezes.

I'm in South Ga and have 9 plants with bunches or buds. 6 of these have no hope of getting mature bananas before freezing. I may be able to get 4 or 5 hands from 2 of my Orinoco bunches.

Hi Josie-

Welcome aboard the Banana Express.

Sounds like you have Musa basjoo; cold hardy plantain. If so, you need do nothing. It will rebound next year. Just learn how to divide the plants from the main corm, and share the wealth with friends and family.

And then be hopelessly hooked! LOL!
