Default Intro

Growing ornamental Banana seeds for the first time, so signed up for this forum. Plan to do some reading in the germination board over the next few days and may have some questions.

I have 35 Ensete ventricosum seeds and will be planting in a few days. My current plan is to start each seed in 4" pot on a heating mat with a temperature probe set to 80F. I live in the US, Zone 4a so I will be growing in containers.

I grew mine 80 deg heat mat, but planted in 4 packs (like one gets from HD, etc. basically 4 small compartments like1.25" x 1.25" Then when have two good leaves (circa 4 inches tall, transplant into trade gallons (or if short of space into quarts, then shortly after into gallons - but prefer gallons as that takes them into good sized plants which go out into the ground (or into big pots). If in ground, dig in fall and put in big pots. Growth is better and winter survival seems to be better when in-ground and then dug. Maybe because we do not have best mix for the potted material or ???? We do a good job on watering. Fertilizer is a tough one as has so much to do with plant size and quality of soil in pots. In ground we do not fertilize as soil good.
