Indoor growing in Phoenix
Hello Everyone,
I stumbled onto this site today and have found a wealth of information. Thank you all. I have been indoor and outdoor gardening most of my life, including time in Alaska. I am a complete newb though to the world of growing bananas. I have a Gros Michael going, along with a new Cavendish. The Cavendish just arrived, and is in rough shape. We shall see. Any tips for me with growing these indoors? Soil Miracle Grow Cactus and Citrus w pete moss augmentation Fertilizers Banana fuel 15-5-30 Alaska fish 5-1-1 Temps 78-90 RH 35-55% Light Daylight via Southern facing windows 10-14 hours varying intensity 100W full spectrum LED 8 hours 60W Blue spectrum LED 5hours Watering Once per week deep watering / soil saturation. All water is done draining from pots after 45-60 minutes. Allowing soil to dry to 3 inch depth between waterings. Plant is spritzed 4-6 times daily, surface only. Pictures of all my plants will be uploaded to the gallery. Thanks and happy growing Azbananaboy |

Thanks everyone for the welcome wishes. I am looking forward to learning a lot here. Once I master the uploading for photos I will get some of my Big Mike posted. Would really like to get some feedback on how it looks and any advise is appreciated.

Re: Indoor growing in Phoenix
Welcome to the Bunch. ... Growing Bananas in containers and inside is difficult, Mostly because of the low humidity of the house. So misting is necessary and some folair spraying with fertilizer (miracle grow) may be required. ... Also, keep an eye on the amount of water in the bottom of the pot. Peat tends to hold too much water and the bottom can become soggy while the top of the pot appears dry. This stagnate water can cause root rot. Banana plants need fresh water and air for the roots. A 50/50 mix of commercial potting soil & perlite works well.

Re: Indoor growing in Phoenix
Do guests in your house complain about the odor of fish?
Personally, I am so sensitive to the odor of fish that when my mother opened a can of sardines, I had to leave the house. Last edited by aruzinsky : 08-31-2018 at 01:22 PM. |

Re: Indoor growing in Phoenix
When first applied the fish fertilizer definitely has an odor. I do all of my watering and feeding outdoors, which does help.

Re: Indoor growing in Phoenix
Just wanted to say thanks for all the warm welcomes. Been busy with four new plants that just arrived from Florida. Will get some pictures up asap. Also added four CFL (6500k) lights to the greenroom. Everything I'm reading says these guys love lots of light, and they seem to be responding well. Fingers crossed.
