Default I just purchased 2 musa basjoo 1 gallon size

I am completely new to banana growing and I'm in zone 6 so its going to be a challenge. I'm not really sure if these 1 gallon plants will make it here, but its worth a try. I've been growing bamboos all along before stumbling upon banana plants which also seems interesting.

Does anyone have any tips, or warnings for a newbie?

Search old threads, Read old threads. Search more old threads, Reads more old threads. Then ask lots of questions and post lots of pics. No seriously welcome and glad to have you here. Where in zone 6 are you from? The basjoo's will definately make it here, but as its late in the year I would start them in pots and replant them next spring in the ground for best results. There are lots of other variables so give us a lil more info and there are many here who will help you along the way.

Welcome, I'm a newbie myself but I wouldn't plant such small plants outside this late.
Other than that, just wishing mine will make it through and the best for your plants aswell!

Welcome!
I would enjoy the plants outside in a pot for a few more weeks & then bring them in!
Zone 6...I was in SW Ohio, that was a 6a/b, I'd've never thought of keeping Bananas outside. Just me though!

There is so much great information(and preat people too!) here on the Org, I've been here 2 1/2 monthes & I'm STILL reading!!

Hope you find the answers you need & hope to see you posting again soon!
Maybe some pictures of your new Bananas? ~Cheryl

Thumbs up Re: I just purchased 2 musa basjoo 1 gallon size

Don't plant them out yet. From my experience and having killed a few.... grow them in the largest pots you can for about 2 years( they can go in ground for the warm months and will do best there) and when the corms(base of the plants) are very large I'm sure you will have better luck overwintering them outdoors. As suggested the cold hardy bananas section will provide you with a lot of knowledge and get you off to a great start. You can always post a question here as well. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking forward to getting them in the mail by next week or so. Once I have some free time, I'll post some pictures of it's progress. I've read that its supposed to grow really fast in the spring though and does better planted in the soil so I'll hold the both in pots indoors this winter and them plant one of them in the soil next spring.

Heres a picture of the 2 musa basjoos that I immediately potted up and put inside my greenhouse in the middle of my bamboos. They are enjoying temperatures that range(60s-100s) and I've seen noticable growth of approximately 5 inches in the 3 days since potting up the bare root plants.

Our Musa Bajoo has lost main psuedostem - will it survive?

In the early Spring,we transplanted our Bajoo and it lost it's main psuedostem (it was soft and just detached as we moved it). It survived one winter, and flourished last summer, but has been very slow to return this spring. At this point there is nothing in the old psuedostem's site, and two small leaves poking out of the area surrounding the old stem.

Will it grow a new psuedostem? Will it ever return to it's previous size?
