Hi All,
Just joined Bananas.org after learning of the group from a Google search on "banana pot". I just ordered a couple of banana trees that I intend to try growing in pots in our house. Although I am supposedly in Zone 8 (New Bern, NC), our winter temps can dip below 12 degrees F several times a year and thus am not sure if my tree choices would survive outside. Any advice would certainly be appreciated. Pot size, soil mix, etc. are all open issues for me. TJon (as in Trawler John)

STEELVIPER,
I just ordered from Greenearth, Inc two trees: a Dwarf Cavendish (aka Carolina King) and a Dwarf Red (aka Cuban Red). Have never grown banana trees, nor ordered from Greenearth, before so it will be a new adventure for me. I also just purchased potting mix from a local nursery for the new plants when they arrive. The Cavendish I might get soon but the Dwarf Red isn't shipping until mid March. I am so eager to plant these trees and see just what they will do. My plan at the moment is to make them into house plants although I believe the Cavendish could go outside here in New Bern. The Dwarf Red is destined to stay in the house I think, but unltimately the Cavendish may make the move outside. My concern at the moment is just what size pot to start the guys in. I assume deep is better than wide, but I know little at this moment. This is the main reason I joined this forum, knowledge about banana trees and the opportunity to pick the brains of the experts. Any advice you can offer will be most appreciated. TJon

Another guy from New Bern. Thats nice. I am growing a few in New Bern too. I have some Ice Cream, orinoco, rajapuri, dwarf red, dwarf cavendish and manzano. I think the manzano might have met his maker though. It has nice roots but isn't doing much. The orinoco, rajapuri, dwarf red, dwarf cavendish and manzano in the house and all are doing pretty good except for the manzano. I bought the orinoco, rajapuri, dwarf red and manzano in december as TCs from Wellsprings. I traded a lady locally for the dwarf cavendish. I have an ice cream in the house that might be dying back to the ground but has a nice pup on it. I also have an 8 ft ice cream under the house and I am experiementing with about a 3 foot one outside with pine needles around it to protect it. I think next year I might use a different protection.
Good luck with your plants. When I get some good mats going maybe we can trade a few if we have different plants. I have a few pictures in my gallery. Last edited by modenacart : 02-04-2007 at 01:28 PM. Reason: added the last line. |
