Indoors or outdoors?
And for the latter, your locale?
If indoors, your plants for photo energy sources?

Outdoors in the summer and indoors during the winter. My container is about 15-20 gallon. Now on that note should my container have holes for drainage or could I put a layer of rocks on the bottom? I live in Southern Indiana.

Drainage yes and get a reservoir tray to fit the bottom; even outside it shouldn't hold too much water and inside you need it to protect your floors unless they're tile over concrete like mine.
