How do I prepare my Musa acumiata planted in pots for the winter?

Hello all Bananafans :) :bananas_b
I do need some advise!
I have some Musa acuminata and some M.basjoo planted in pots and just wonder how I should get them the best treatment/care during the winter?? :bed:
Next year the M.basjoo shall be placed outside year around.
I had one M.acumiata last year and during the wintertime all the leaves went yellow and after a while the plant died!
I have a basement with growing lights and with a temperature of 12-16 C.
Or should they be placed near a window(south).
Onemore thing :) When do I cut off the suckers?? Shall I do that before winter or shall I do it in the springtime???
I would be so greatful for some help!

Marcus (Sweden)

Welcome aboard, Marcus :) ! I think you'll find this a very friendly & info-packed site, I sure did! If ya have any questions about using the forum, just ask.
As for over-wintering, I have over-wintered (with fabulous success) 4 Blue Java bananas for 3 years now. If ya cut off the pups, be sure to give them a little of the corm and roots. I put mine in pots that are just barely big enough, rarely give them much food, and Never water them at all, in the winter. I keep them in a cool (under 20 c) room near a sunny SW window.
BTW, you'll find even more, & more detailed, info on that in the threads :). Enjoy!

For Musa Ae Ae for sale, check the Ads at the bottom of the 1st page of this forum. I've seen lots of beautiful Ae Ae's in the threads & galleries. There's very likely someone with one for sale.

So if I understand this right! I can put my pots in the basement (under 20 C) and Dont give them any water at all. In my basement I have growlights, hope thats ok for my bananas?

No problem, glad to help :). That's exactly right! Also, the growlights should work just fine. If ya have any other questions, feel free to ask!
Damn I love bananas, too :)

BTW, here's a photo of some of the Ice Cream Bananas I've over-wintered for 3 years now. The main stems are about 8-10 inches wide. I took the photo last weekend:

The tomato arbor is about 9 feet tall but the tomatoes are dying back from the summer heat. Best of Luck :) !

Oh! I must say that this was a very friendly welcome :)
And yea, we usually do have a cold winter. But it usually only gets below freezing in late januari and februari.
Eric, damn they are looking great!!! Hope I will get my bananas to do as well as yours!
I will put up some pics so you all may follow my progress with my bananas.
Thanks folks :)
Maque......
