Hi guys,
A few years ago I visited a pre-Katrina New Orleans and was delighted to see banana trees in the backyard and to see balconies covered with my favourite house plants. The image stuck in my mind. Imagine my surprise when I found out that there are bananas you can grow back in my native Holland... Did some more digging around and started to like the idea... Then shelved it. But got bored last spring and picked up some passion fruits from the grocery (on sale), scooped the seeds out and sprouted them. I now have 25 potted up seedlings dotted around my apartment, and have succumbed to a new hobby that is looking to take up even more space. Next stop: musa iterans, six seeds ready to sprout. I chose this type of banana tree because it is said to like the shady conditions in my courtyard type backyard. And because this three will grow up to 12 metres acc to the seed merchant! Imagine a tree like that, growing in an inner city garden in Holland... sticking out like a sore thumb... less than a hunderd feet from a wind mill...! It will raise eyebrows!!! The tourists will be stumped... Might wake up one morning to the sound of Japanese tourist camaras clicking away Would dearly love some advice along the way, getting this hobby started... Cheers, linda-lu (nickname) |

You will find many of us who fight the odds and start bananas where "they are not supposed to grow here". Best of luck and enjoy the forum. There is so much experience here, you will be amazed.

In a city known for its cheese, syrup waffles and candles... And once for its pipes and ceramics, but that's ancient history. Enough clues? Nice to know there's another cloggie 'round here!
Hi everyone, thanks for the welcome ! |
