No, not with those extreme temperatures. The most likely method to succeed with those temperatures is to dig up your plants before winter sets in, trim off the leaves, and store them in a garage or under your house, basement, etc. until spring.

Servus
I tried the basement method but in the first year all plants rotted cos the air in the basement was just too humid. Last year because we did get no snow cover whatsoever the frost got its way deep into soil and the basement-it had never happened before-so everything including potatoes froze.
This year is the last year I try to overwinter banana "trunks" in a warmer and dry storage room. If it fails I'll give up.

I am only trying for one more year too. I am getting 2 Velutina banana plants because they only grow 8 feet tall. I will keep them inside near the furnace in winter and I won't water them or fertilize them till spring. If they droop too much I may give them a very little water. If they don't stay alive there are other plants I can grow. I wish us both luck.
Bis dann. =)

Must say I did not mean I was gonna stop growing bananas at all. Every year I pot up some pups and keep 'em on my windowsill. They don't grow as big as I would like them to. I wish I could have a huuuuge banana plants in my garden. Gonna get myself that 'Mekong Giant' and see if it grows as they promise.

BTW my 'Siam Ruby' ain't ruby

Oh! Alles klar. maybe I should not give up so easy. I read that banana Plants can make Pups but I've only been growing them one year and my 2 banana Plants didn't grow very big and didn't make any Pups. They do look really cool if they would grow more! =D

I saw that Siam Ruby banana Plant at a nursery site but the plants in the picture were all green. Maybe there is more than 1 kind. I'm going to google that Mekong Giant. That sounds amazing! What kinds of banana Plants are you growing now?

EDIT: I just saw it at Brian Botanicals and zOmg! That's massive! I would need to live in a giant house, lol. thanks for the heads up!

At the mo I have basjoo, itinerans, sikkimensis (from a German friend), Siam Ruby and Thai Black. But the last one I had to cut down to the ground level because of rotting. It is still alive but I don't know for how much longer.
I also have Ensete Maurelii.
Fortunately there is Markus Jonda in Germany and he sells various banana plants at very affordable prices. Top quality plants not some elongated twigs grown in pure peat. Soon he'll have Mekong Giant for sale
As for Siam Ruby there are greener varieties which grow faster and do not need that high temps to get them going. The original SR becomes red if given plenty of sun and heat.
