Hi from the bay area
Hi, I just started growing bananas (Raja Puri, Ice Cream and Dwarf Red) a few weeks ago. I've seen some neighbors here in East Palo Alto that have bananas growing like mad but since my spanish is poor and some of the neighborhoods are scary I've never asked them what types they are growing.
I'm trying to grow as much rare fruit on my little property as possible. |

I'm in Santa Clara & just bought 2 Dwarf Orinocos I stumbled across at the Master Gardeners' Plant Sale-- not too original, but it's a start. So, can I pick your brain about where you see bananas thrive in the bay area? Full sun? Sheltered? How are you handling the frost issue? I look forwad to sharing ideas, Lenore

Welcome aboard, Jason! If you ignore the 'scary' part, here's the question to ask your Latino neighbours about their bananas:
Que tipo de banano es esto? Most of the time, though, they'll just look at you like you've grown an extra head. Many Spanish-speakers differentiate between Banana and Plantain, but not so much between Cavendish and Dwarf Orinoco. |
