Default Hi from AZ!

I purchased a vitamix a couple of months ago, and quickly discovered smoothies with fresh or frozen bananas as the thickener so it started me thinking....

How nice it would be to have a banana plant to grow my own bananas, would it be possible here in the desert? After doing a little research, it is possible to grow them here, and as luck would have it, I went to Home Depot for mulch, and as I moved closer to the checkout, I saw a "Goldfinger" banana plant with an overall healthy look, although it did have a few browned edges on it's leaves from our extreme heat. It was the only one they had, I grabbed it ($19.99) and it seems to be doing great on the covered patio, it has one new leaf in just a week!

Now I'm waiting for my second banana plant "Truly Tiny Musa" to arrive this week. Is this an addiction starting?

I love this board, it has great people and great information, thanks for having me.

Welcome! I'm new here, too, and I'm happy that you are starting to work with bananas in Arizona. It must be noted that bananas grow in many parts of the world beyond the humid tropics -- even North Africa and the foothills of the Himalayas! They do require lots of water and shelter from dry wind and intense sun, however. If you can provide these conditions, you're off to a good start!

Thanks for the welcomes!
Norm, I am in Mesa-I wish that I had looked for banana plants in April, I think I was just lucky to be in the right place when they had only the one left. The Home Depot is on Val Vista Rd. I have seen on a few boards that people have found banana plants at Lowes but I haven't looked for them there, yet.

Tom, I am glad that you still are using and loving your vitamix, I'll bet it has seen lots of bananas of all varieties in that amount of time.

Gleneagles I am going to do my best to take good care of my banana plants, good advice, thanks!

CTPalms, I am afraid you are right, it will be an addiction.

Cincinnana, That is what I am afraid of, just the beginning. LoL

Hello little Lady, and welcome aboard the Banana Express.

I have been all over this wonderful nation of ours, and Arizona is one of my most favorite places to visit.

There is a nursery, heading toward Phoenix on Baseline, that has almost everything you'll need in the Valley area. It's on the left. I don't remember the name, as it it was 2000 when I was there, but if anyone can set you up, it'll be them.
