Hey folks glad I found you
 

I originaly got my banana plant for the leaves...they are good for breeding bettas (siamese fighting fish) about 5 years ago.
I'm pretty sure from my research that I've got a super dwarf cavendish, it pups like crazy but doesn't get very big and has never fruited. I must admit though since I don't know much about nanners that I've not been taking care of it properly. So... that's why I'm so glad I've found you folks. Maybe some day I can have some home grown nanners:2223:

But those other sites didnt give me enough info!!! I craved to learn more about the
~BANANAS~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sherry, your bananas need the outside warmth from late spring to late summer to fruit. Also, they need to be a fruiting variety! Please post a picture of your plant(s) so we can argue (err...discuss!) what they are.

I'm guessing that my nanners are super dwarf cavendish, that's what I'm lead to believe anyway, but when I get a chance I'l post pics so you can argu...debate the topic. I just kinda figured that everyone asks for opinions on what their plant is that you guys would get sick of it:)

Yep, the leaves are floated on the top of the water. It helps to keep the bubble nest in tack and apparently the tannins or whatever are in the leaves help to condition the fish for breeding. Don't know if it's true or not, but it worked for me:)

u lay a piece of the banana leaf and the male will build a bubble nest under it....long story short

u place the male in a 2-10 gallon tank.....water halfways....lay a piece of banana leaf in the side......put the female in a separate bowl across the leaf then place the male...the male will get excited and start building a nest for the female to see and if she likes it they will have fun and soon like about 24-30 hours the babies will hatch and hang down the bubble nest where the (BANANA LEAF IS).....lol i explained how they breed and not the purpose of the leaf was :P

i used to breed bettas too

Half moon and crowntail mainly

my ultimate goal was OPAQUE HALF MOON BETTAS but i never got around to trying it

even then this isnt a real 100% opaque it has a pink body and not the opaque color....hard to do because the red wash will most likely be in there in the genetics but can be bred out :P but thats another forum and topic :P

on the site it talks about color genetics if anyone in here wants to start and breed by genetics and not go at it all un uneducated

here.... The genetic make up of a opaque white is represented by: C bl Si Nr Op

C - The cambodian gene for lack of dark body pigment which causes the light body.
bl - Steel blue pigment which appears silvery-white when on a light background.
Si - The spread of the iridocyte pigment, in this case steel blue over the fish.
Nr - Non-red, causes the inability to produce red pigment.
Op - Opaque, the special gene that cause the powdery appearence of the fish.

Hey Sherry!!! WELCOME!!!! Very happy to have ya here.. Don't worry about anyone being tired of the same ole question...THEY AREN'T!!! LOL Ask away!!! You could not have found a better group of people...The fish breeding sounds very cool! I hope you will post some pics of them as well..

One quick note if you move your plant outside keep in shade, then after couple weeks move it so gets little more sun till in full sun light, or you'll burn the leaves

Some years ago, I bred bettas, by the thousands. Usually used a floating aquatic plant, like water sprite, water lettuce, or water hyacinth, for the male to build the nest under. Never used banana leaves but, on occasion, I used a leaf from a maple tree, or something.
