Default Hey all!

Hello!
I'd like to introduce myself, I'm Jason from San Diego. I currently grow several kinds of different fruit trees and intend to purchase a banana plant early this spring to give that a shot. I've been a long-time lurker and have enjoyed this forum immensely.

Thank you!
Jason

What kind of banana are you considering as your first? I've discovered that bananas are like potato chips so, unless you're gardening on a postage stamp (quite likely in SD I know), be prepared to "eat" more than one or 2 or 20...

Welcome!

Thank you all for the kind welcomes!

Kat,
I wasn't thinking of anything exotic to begin, but will probably try a Orinoco or Brazilian. I have a spot in mind for the first plant, it's just the 2nd or 3rd that might give me problems. I do not have a huge yard, but it's a corner lot so bigger than most of my neighbors. I have a large Bird of Paradise plant in the front yard, I may rip that out at some point and put one or more banana plants there.

Thanks!
Jason

Edit: Mistake about Bird of paradise plant.

Don't rush to do an Orinoco; they're kinda plebian here in FL and, unless you love eating them, not worth precious space IMO. Brazilian is a better choice I suspect though I don't have one but want one some day. Fingers crossed someone in your area can suggest a great 1st musa for you.

Welcome to bananas.org from another San Diegan.
I grow 9 different varieties, just like Kat said, it is very addicting.
If you only have limited space, Orinoco would not necessarily be my first choice (just okay taste and lower yield) compared to other varieties we can grow here in San Diego. Dwarf Brazilian is nice, I personally prefer Namwah and the Mysore varieties (Pisang Klotek, Pisang Ceylon).

Great advice, thank you. Sometime in the near future, I plan on heading over to Encanto Farms to see what Jon has available. I'll probably pick up a variety or two, and maybe a fig tree...as long as the boss lets me!

Welcome aboard the Banana Express, Jason.

Back in 1988 when I was living over in Lemon Groove, I remember seeing someone in town by Dumas St. that had some in their yard but were very crispy looking. Just make sure they get enough water.

Forget the boss... As they say, "It's better to ask forgiveness than permission...

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.
