Default Help - I found this in my banana

While eating a banana today, after the first bite, I hit something "crunchy" in the second bite. It is black and in the center of the banana, and after peeling the rest of the fruit, I scooped away the fruit to reveal something about the size of one's little finger in diameter and it ran almost the full length of the banana. I looked at different web sites trying to ID what this is to no avail. Does anyone out there have any ideas what it might be? Next step might be for me to call a local TV station and let them figure it out. It's not smooth - it kind of feels like a catapillar (rough/lumpy) with little spine like projections.

Is this a nana you grew or a store bought one?

Is this the typical yellow Cavendish grocery store type? I've come across something similar where the center of the fruit can be a bit like what you describe all the way down the center but it's usually on the red bananas or occasionally the Manzano bananas. I think it is a product of the fruit not being fully developed when it was picked.

Like Brent described, I have run into the 'black stuff' in my Hawaiian Plantains too.
It almost runs the length of the banana, kind of centrally located.
Hope you figure out what it is! ~Cheryl

Did you ever figure out what it is? I ate a bite before I realized what it was, I'm about to call my local tv station too. This is freaking me out, and it's scary looking.
