Default Hello from the US Virgin Islands!

Hi, everyone!

I have a hillside home on the rainy north side of St. Croix, the 'big island. Right now, I have a Cuban Red and two Bacubas-- little roundish very sweet bananas.

I have a question, does anyone know anything of a wild banana that's indigenous to a tiny Pacific island named Nieue? (pron. 'new way')? It stains an intense red.

The wiki on the island talks about the bananas a little: Niue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - names them hulahula. But if they stain the teeth like betel .... All us banana harvesters know how banana sap can stain a shirt.

Hiya Re: Hello from the US Virgin Islands!

I'm guessing it is a Fe'i banana, based on where it is. These are cooking bananas, cannot be eaten raw. Never had one but wish there is a source on the U.S. mainland, I do wish to try growing them in Florida.

Happy Growing!

Historically, bananas are native to Burma ...
