Hello from Temecula California
Hello All,
Our family is moving in a couple weeks from Escondido, California to Temecula, California. It's only about 30 miles away, but is a different microclimate. I have a red banana growing quite happily in our compost pile, but have no flower stalk or pups since planting it about a year ago. I found this site when researching the possibility of growing bananas in Temecula to help me decide whether to bother relocating it along with hubby, 4-yr old, two dogs, one cat and 8 chickens. |

Now your red banana ... is it the ornamental Ensete type? If so, the winter cold will kill the foliage to the ground but it will come back every spring.

Re: Hello from Temecula California
first though was to take the banana and the chickens, leave the rest. ... But, since you've already taken-in the others, they wont survive without you. You have to take them all on the move. .... haha
what type of banana is that and can you post a picture of the group? Welcome to the forum. |

Re: Hello from Temecula California
You're absolutely right. It does get cold there. I'm hoping to build a green house for my more tender plants. I have the original banana plant tag somewhere. I doubt it's ornamental as I tend to grow things with a purpose (native habitat restoration or edible). I'll post more info once I locate it amongst our moving mayhem.

Our move from Escondido to Temecula was so much work. The banana in question was left behind. But, I did just pick up an ornamental Ensete Abyssinian Red Maurelii. You seem to know your stuff! Do you think I can plant it out now and just treat it as a perennial? (Preferred.) Then wait until leaf die back due to cold and mulch heavily? Or, should I pot it up and keep it indoors during the cold months? Also, we're still clearing and building the soil before planting. Can you recommend any fruiting bananas that might stand a chance in ground in Sunset Zone 18? Thanks so much for any advice you can provide! Best, Susan |

Re: Hello from Temecula California
I don't have experience with Ensete. There is an ornamental (seeded) Musa that works in Temecula: Musa Basjoo.
