Hello from Sydney, Australia

Hello all,

I actually joined back in March, but have not posted until today.

While I like growing plants in general, I'm pretty new to the "banana passion" and love seeing it in all of the posts here. Best site for banana lovers, I say!

I'm amazed at the paradox of there being hundreds of tasty banana types out there and yet we only get Cavendish and what we call Lady Finger or Sugar bananas regularly where I live. The latter two names are used interchangeably here and quite frankly, I am confused as to what Lady Fingers and Sugars really are and that's even before I get into the overlapping local names for different bananas thing. More than once, I've seen a sign in a store advertising Sugar bananas, but the fruit beneath it actually had "Lady Finger" stickers on them!

So I've got a banana plant labelled as Sugar where I bought it, but who knows what it really is. I'm hoping it's a Ducasse. It's about 8 or 9' tall now with light green leaves and a relatively narrow pstem that has reddish streaks, but not Pisang Keling-style red. I'm hoping to see a flag leaf over the next few months as we have just started our Summer down here.

Thanks for letting me join your site :)

Hi Paco, welcome to this great site.
Ladyfinger bananas in Oz are what this site calls Brazillian. Sugars here are what we call here in oz Ducasse. On this site they are called Namwah. Go to the wiki and look them up. I know it's confusing but you'll get the hang of it.
Happy banana growing.

Thanks for clarifying that, Brod. Yes, the bewildering array of names (to me at least) is a bit hard to get my head around at the moment, but as you say, I'll eventually get it!

Welcome to the banana nut club.

Do you have a pic or two we could see? We love pics here and are way more helpful in the I.D. department with them. One kinda close on the growing point, like 3 feet (1m.) away and one just far enough to see the whole plant.

Sure, Sputinc7. I'll post some pics shortly when I get home. Thank you.

Edit: I moved this ID request to the correct section of this site. The new thread is at:

Does this look like a Namwah/Nam Wa? - Bananas.org

Thanks
