Hello from Orange County, CA

Thanks for this great forum!

I bought a few Musi Manzano plants four years ago, and we had a cold winter and I thought they were dead, but one of them came back and is starting to produce right now, plus has put up two pups! Then, I went to the Orange County Rare Fruit Growers meeting a couple of weeks ago and won a Misi Luki in a raffle and got that in the ground the next day. So, I guess I'm going to get hooked on bananas.

My wife puts more time into the garden than I do, and we grow everything organically. But, we seem to grow weeds better than anything else! We have a 900 square foot vegetable garden (which is mostly between harvest and winter planting now), another area about the same size that is all strawberries, and a few fruit trees (avocado, peach, lemon, orange, persimmon, and a 4-in-one with peach, apricot and plum).

I'm looking forward to learning more about bananas - and getting my first crop in a few months!

George

Welcome to the forum George. When did your Manzano bloom?

Thanks for the quick welcome messages!

The Manzano bloomed in mid-July (I think, I failed to write down the date). I'm assuming that this means it should be ready to pick in late December or early January - is that right? Since you're near me Mitchel, is that about the right timing from bloom to ripeness for southern CA for this variety?

Yes they will take about 6 months to fill out and ripen. Just be carefull and either cover or remove the bunch if we are suposed to get any frosts. Even if they are not fully mature they will still ripen once removed.
