Hello From Northeast Ohio
Have been a north by south gardener for over 10 year now. Have had a grove of basjoo for almost a decade. I also have over wintered trachycarpus, sago palms and canna. Looking forward to talking with other enthusiast on this site.

Re: Hello From Northeast Ohio
Welcome from New York City! I've been overwintering palm trees outdoors in my yard for about 3 years now. I have about 10 different species of bananas (which is very minor compared to others on this fourm!), but Im hoping for some edible fruit from them soon!

Re: Hello From Northeast Ohio
Welcome from Tennessee! Nice accomplishment with that basjoo grove. I bet it's a nice sized mat by now.

Re: Hello From Northeast Ohio
Severe damage to trachycarpus occurred at 10d.f. in windy conditions. It is always windy when it is cold in northeast Ohio. I keep mine covered for half of dec. through early march usually. They have been unaffected by temps. obove 20 d.f. no matter how windy unprotected. You will on most years never need to protect trachycarpus in zone 8. Temp. is the least of your worries in zone 8. My palms have survived -20.f. without damage provided they are protected. I believe in still weather they could survive without damage down to 10d.f. If conditions are calm for a short period. In your case the palm going out of dormacy during a warm spell followed by a cold snap several times a year could stress them out more than being covered in a zone 5-b winter in Ohio for 2-3 months.
