Hello from NE Florida

Hi all,

Thought I'd pop in here to learn a little more about bananas. I've been playing with them in the yard for a few years. Had one flower in September, which was SUPER amazing to watch that unfold literally daily, but it happened a bit late to actually eat the fruits. Frost got it while I was on vacation.

But I was hooked at that point.

Thus far, I have fertilized only by planting bananas around a compost pit (I first learned it as a 'banana circle') but I'm contemplating applying fertilizer this year to see if it makes a difference. I hope this find you all well!

welcome neighbor. looks like your near the plantation. I am over here in hillbilly heaven straight west of you in middleburg. zfallon is in o.p. you need anything fast cars, fast women, fast bananas let me know.

Welcome! I started my first bananas from tissue culture plants last spring. I'm hoping to *maybe* get some fruit this year.

Right on! What varieties are you growing there? The dwarf namwah seem to grow the fastest in my setup. I'm also trying some Sabas that are doing okay over the winter, which is good because they have sentimental value for my wife (are descended from bananas that my wife's mother had)

I've also tried dwarf Cavendish, double mahoi, thousand finger, but found at random in my travels, without researching. They seem to take big hits in the winter and spend the rest of the summer recovering back to where they were. I may bail on those.

Another neighbor! Sweet! I've purchased namwahs that were advertised as from tissue culture, but I confess I don't really know much about that. Is there any benefit to doing it that way vs. getting one that started life as a water/sword sucker?

haven't got very many, 30 or better. I love the namwa don't have any dwarves that I know of. blue java, praying hands, kandarin and ladyfinger last thru the winter very very well. got some unconfirmed iholenas doing fantastic also. manzanos are wimps in the winter but grow fast . I cant understand why they want to sell dc and gran nains in florida worst growing bananas I got;

Well, I am embarrassed to say that I gave up too quick on the dcs. I went out last night, and cut down three to give more light to my wife's sabas. When the biggest of the three hit the ground, the top exploded, revealing a flower. I felt like such an idiot because I didn't check.

If you ever have any blue java suckers to trade/sell, let me know. I've been looking for those online, but haven't found anyone with them in stock yet. Haven't heard of iholena, I'll look that up.

Tissue cultures don’t always turn out as labeled. But, they are cheap. Most of the time people report getting good varieties. For instance, I bought three blue java TCs. All of them look different. Lol.

Once I get these to flower, and confirm what they are, I am willing to trade.

or you could just get them from people who know they have real blue javas.

How do you confirm they are real blue javas when it’s the lab that messes up?

You don't get it from a lab. You get it from someone who has a real blue java, such as my self or others on here. who got it from...someone else. but not from a lab.
I got mine from Crazy Banana, not sure were she got hers. She was the source for many of us on here. I now macro propagate them for production.

Sorry. I misread your previous comment. I thought we were only talking TC's only. I did order two Dw Nmwahs and a Goldfinger from you last year. So, now I know that those plants (and the plants I got from Ty) are accurate.

I am currently on another persons list for a Blue Java for this season. But, I'll contact you if that falls through.
