Hello from Indiana

This is my first post in this forum. I have been growing cold hardy bananas for several years in SW Indiana zone 6b. I have had the best luck with Musa basjoo, Musella lasiocarpa and Musa velutina.

Here are some Musa velutina poking up along the east foundation of our house.

Welcome aboard, hope to have few Velutinas, plus Basjoo to overwinter outside as well.

Hi Paul! Nice to see you over here. Did you get your Musa yunnanensis (assuming that it is yunnanensis) in the ground yet? Any pictures? If you can get M. velutina through a winter, you should be able to get M. yunnanensis through also (with good siting). If you can find the real Musa itinerans, that should easily be hardy for you there. And what about M. sikkimensis? Have you tried it yet?

Glad to see you over here!!! I commented on your post of your velutina on the "other" board and just wanted to thank you for the post on them doing so well for you in 6B. If you saw the reply I posted on it, here is a link to an interesting thread we started last fall about the distribution of some velutina seeds I harvested and the results of some of these great nanner growers results with them. You may find this thread interesting...

Hi Frank,
The New Musa is in a large pot and I will plant it the next day it doesn't rain. The description give to me is that it will be very large and put up suckers several feet from the original so I think it might be the real deal. It is getting normal looking leaves so I will take a pic and post for you. I have killed M. sikkimensis once but was a mass produced little tissue culture plant. I should have given it more protection. Do you have your bananas planted? If so which ones work there?

I love M. velutina. It is a nice size, flowers are beautiful as well as the fruits and it flowers every year. We should all be selecting the hardiest individuals we can find! Its marginal hardiness it the only drawback.
