'Hello' from The Hollyberry Lady, in Canada!
:woohoonaner: Hi there, everyone!
This sure looks like a great forum. :goteam: I have never grown a banana plant before, or even knew you could in my neck of the woods. I was told today though, that I can. I am wondering what the best way to go about getting a sweet dwarf banana tree would be? I am interested in growing one in a container. Should I order one through the mail, or can you grow them from seed? I am so interested in learning more, before I impulsively rush to buy one. Joining this society, I suppose is the first step. Thank you in advance, for any information. I look forward to exploring more... : ) |

Wow - thanks for the warm welcome guys! Lorax is the one who invited me here! Thanks Lorax - looks very cool. I am so excited, now.
Hopefully this forum will help me decide on a dwarf tree just right for me. I don't want to get just anything. I didn't even know this society existed! Wow, there's a lot of members aboard - cool. I can see that a banana tree will be in my future - my very near future... : ) |

Though I am not from your region, getting a Super Dwarf Cavendish would be a nice choice for its size which is suitable for container growing. Also, the fruits taste great and there's plenty of it. Being small, you can easily move it in for winter. I am sure some one will come along and tell you where you can get one. The other alternative is the Dwarf Cavendish which grows a little bigger but more fruits. Although these two are old cultivars and sort of out of fashion, I still like them very much and I have a number of them in my collection. Oh, and edible bananas don't come from seed - you'll be looking for a young plant, Hollyberry.

Thanks again for the information and replies.
Do ornamental, non-edible varieties then, grow from seed? Is there such a thing? Even just the look of a little tree growing bananas on it, would be fabulous - I wouldn't even care if I could eat 'em! I bet if I could taste one though, I wouldn't be saying that, huh?!!! Mmmmmmm. Anyway, this is just way too cool! Who would have thought? - me, growing bananas! So this is where it has all lead - finally doing the ultimate (at least for me it's the ultimate) and growing fruit I thought would never grow here. I still have to get over the shock of being able to grow them at all. : O Time for sleep - Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... ; ) |

You got it! The ornamentals (Musa ornata, Musa sikkimensis, the Ensetes, etc etc,) are grown from seed (and produce seedy fruit.)

There are also some other dwarf varieties, such as Truly Tiny, but most are variants on the basic Cavendish. I have a Dwarf Cavendish (DC) and just obtained a tissue cultured Truly Tiny. I'm quite anxious to see how it does. Another interesting one is called High Color Mini. Whichever you choose, my bet is you can't stop at one.

Welcome to the organization Hollyberry Lady!
Dwarf Cavendish (DCV) and Super Dwarf Cavendish (SDC) would be excellent contenders for your banana growing efforts. I like the "double" sometimes refered to as "Mahoi" which is a Dwarf Cavendish type. Make sure your pot can drain so that there will be no "standing" water in it. Standing water in the pot causes root rot in many banana cultivars. Good growing!! :2239: |

That ornamental one you described lorax, sounds awesome - is it a dwarf? I want something extremely ornamental, as opposed to edible. I also have a fluorescent and metal halide light system, so supplemental lighting can be offered in the winter, to sustain my plant/s. I enjoy growing plants mainly from seed, and would get a certain satisfaction from growing a banana tree this way. A store bought one is not as rewarding to me. I am willing to trade for some seeds of an ornamental dwarf banana variety. Although I don't have banana seeds, I do have many other fruit tree seeds, and tons of veggie, herb, and flower seeds too! I too, am huge on good drainage in all my pots, but thank you for the advice. Nothing worse than a plant sitting in soggy soil! Yikes! I will explore this forum further shortly - a bit busy, getting ready for the season and all. I am very happy I joined here! Thank you for all the comments and welcomes. Looking forward to a possible seed trade with someone... : ) |
