So, first step is taken and registeration done.

What about me? Well, I'm guy from Eastern Finland, and I looove gardening and houseplants.
I've had a banana before, and now I have two different kind of bananas germinating: Musa basjoo and Musa balbisiana. Lets see how it goes!
Also I have other tropicals growing; mangos, coffee plants, citruses and so on..

If I get my bananas to germinate, my plans is to grow then on east-facing balcony that gets full sun 8 hours a day, and overwinter them under some ESLs.

Wish me luck! Happy to read and learn from other more experienced growers!

How cold do your winters get?

Last week we had -28c, I would say that -30c at most. Some winters it can get up to -35-40c temporary, but it's not that common nowadays. But overall, it's pretty cold, for plants, not for me

I used to live near the arctic circle, and there is a bit colder. Now I live in the "South", the spring begins much earlier, and it's not that dark at mid-winter, summer is warmer and so on..

Gonna pick your brain if I may: What exactly does Suomi mean, and how do you pronounce it? Also, do you know anything about those handmade hunting knives with the reindeer etched on the blade?

Hi Snarkie, and thanks for asking! Suomi means Finland in finnish language, like Sweden is Sverige in swedish. It's the name of our nation.
It's pretty hard to tell how we pronouce it, because english and finnish languages are so different.
I quess you can find lots of "how to" videos from youtube.

And yes, I do know of those knives, I've made one in school myself. Unfortunately I lost it during a fishing trip couple of years ago. Nowadays I have kids so time for fishing is limited..
Also my neighbour makes them for sale.
Nice and handy knives.

Edit. Just ask if you want to know something more specific of them, I'll try to answer

Thanks for the info! When I was a kid, we had a Finnish exchange student named Virpi. I have a proof set of coins and it says, Suomi Finland on it, as well as all the stamps I have (love those glow in the dark stamps, by the way). I also have one of those knives, and of all the knives I own, it is the sharpest, with the best steel I've ever encountered. Very plain, but highest quality. Someone told me once, the company that puts them out, but I have forgotten. From what you are saying, they are all handmade from across the country and then put up for sale? Wow. So no two are alike. My small one was stolen when I was 14. I still have the sheath, with the reindeer fur on it, in case I can ever find a replacement knife. The big one has a smooth sheath without any fur.

In Finland we have two official languages, finnish and swedish. In swedish language, Suomi translates as Finland, like in english too.
So when you come across the border, you'll find signs thag say Suomi Finland.

One company that makes quality knives is J.Marttiini, and there are some others, but for the most part there are small companies that makes knives for sale.
And many youngsters make knives as a schoolproject in highschool, as I did.
