Hello to all in the plant world!!
Hello,
I'm very new to this whole computer thing, so please bear with me.. My name is Sue and I live in DeMotte, Indiana (zone 5). I used to grow Citrus, tropical and subtropical fruit, orchids, and palms with a few oddities thrown in, I also do Exotic and wildlife rescues and rehabs. That was until the 17th of April this year. A person on a neighboring road was burning something and walked away. Well to say this short, the fire got out of control and burned across the acreages and burnt down my home, garage, and outbuildings. My family(husband and two children(ages 10&14) and I lost it all!! Burnt to the ground!! About 18 citrus,14 bananas,Mango,Papaya,Cacao(chocolate),Starfruit,Coconut, and a whole lot of other trees and hundreds of 2-4 year old seedling palm, citrus etc.. We have tried to save the sad burnt rootballs but no luck as of yet. I stumbled across this website and think it is great!!! Hoping to start my collection again but since most of my favorites were in about the 25 year old and older and in 24-42 inch pots.. You can just imagine the mess, not to mention the antiques and keepsakes, and my computer!! Looking on the bright side.... We were not home and are all doing fine, I just can't wait to get started replacing my plants!!!! Thanks for letting me say "Hello" and have a simply wonderful year!! Take care, Sue Last edited by IndianaSue : 08-13-2008 at 04:27 PM. Reason: didn't like it |

Welcome to the org Sue!
![]() Man what a story! Im so sorry to hear about all of your losses. Man that just sucks. I guess you have no choice but to look on the bright side when disasters like that strike really. I guess you can look at it like a new project, in that you are going to make your new collection even bigger, better and stonger than your old one was! ![]() I hope either that persons insurance covered all of your losses, or you sue the living hell out of them. Sure, they might be sorry, and it was not intentional , but there is NO excuse for something like that, ZERO. They decided to leave things unattended like a dumbass, so they deserve everything they get, and I hope they even get JAIL time. Might sound mean, but hey, if someone is really dumb enough to do something like that, then they deserve the consequences. I guess im just mean, but i dont feel sorry for people like that in the least. The less of them that are around, the less problems we all have as a whole. sounds like they deserve a darwin award. (if you know what a darwin award is, then you know that im really being not nice to the person that started that mess) Anyway, sorry for the rant, welcome to the forums. Hope you stick around and share the progress of all your new stuff! |

I am so sorry for your loss, and I know how it's harder to bounce back in a cold climate versus simply getting back on your feet with a new collection in a sub/tropical climate. Hope you do though, and welcome! There's a lot of helpful and friendly people here. There's also a few people here in cold climates who also grow tropicals
( Slowly starting a collection, mostly bananas, citrus, and miracle fruit as of right now ) |

Have you gotten back into growing? Hope so, as to me it is a way to ease the stress of surviving ones discomforts. Good luck, good growing and stay healthy.
