Hello

Hello everyone, I found the site today after looking for information on musa velutina and thought I should join. I live in East TN and have just recently started growing bananas. I also grow carnivorous plants such as Sarracenias, Nepenthes, Droseras, and a couple venus fly traps. My mom also grows brugmansias, sedum, alocasias, colocasias, daylilies, and many many others. The bananas I have now are basjoo (which seems to not be growing at all), velutina (which is getting fairly large) and one other that we are not sure on its ID. So this is my introduction and I look forward to reading the posts on this site and learning as much as I can about bananas.

Welcome to the org. There are many people on here that are very helpful and there is really some invaluable knowledge on this site. Sounds like you have quite the collection!

Thanks for the welcome. Here is a pic of the unknown banana we have, hopefully someone can ID it for us.

Welcome aboard, Aric! Glad to see you intro'd yourself. Hope you found my email response a help... As far as your mystery banana, I ain't real good at it, yet, but it sure looks alot like my red iholene... I also would like to throw in Musa Borelon into the mix. Although mine is not as vibrant in the coloration as yours seems to be.

Re: Hello

Welcome to the forum. The picture looks like a Rojo to me. See my avatar. But then again it dosen't look like it has as much red in it as mine.

Re: Hello

Do you think possibly it might be a musa acuminata zebrina. They sell them alot at the stores around here as ornamentals. :/ I love the pure red on the bottom of that leaf!

Re: Hello

Ahava, here's the wiki page. Musa Sumatrana (Rojo) - Bananas Wiki I think it's wrong. :ha:

I work at WallyWorld lol. And we had a flat of those come in, and your plant reminds me of them. I'm no expert by any means though. Goodluck finding out what it is. :)

Re: Hello

well welcome from a middle tn'er. lol! well im gonna put my 2 cents in and say your lovely pic dosent look like my musa zebrina.....the underleaves on mine are not red....but it could possibly be a siam ruby. jmo.

Re: Hello

ok i need to correct myself.....my zebrina does have red on the underleaf. that was my mistake. i had to go look....so that was my bad. upon further inspection of my bloodleaf yours looks a lot like mine. so i would say it is a musa zebrina.

Re: Hello

I definitely think it is Musa Bordelon. And I am almost sure it is not Zebrina.

Bordelon:

(Whatever's picture)

Zebrina:

(Foye's picture)

See the difference? Zebrina is blotches of red, while Bordelon is a much greener leaf, with a more waxy stem IMO.

I agree with Randy, definitely Bordelon.

Re: Hello

Now let's compare.

Your banana versus Bordelon:

You banana versus Zebrina:

(Foye's picture again)

I hope you guys don't mind me using your pictures but they displayed the leaf well, and I am trying to make a point so that is important. So thanks again!!!

See the difference/similarities?

Re: Hello

Yeah I can for sure see the similarities between the bordelon and mine. Heres another pic of it but I think we have what it is nailed down.

Re: Hello

Arin,
Here is another comparison of Bordelon vs. zebrinus that I have growing about 8' apart. Sorry the Bordelon pic is not the best quality with the intense sun we were having the day I took these pics...

Bordelon

Zebrinus:

I really don't think it will be, but it has grown well enough to store some and leave some and see what happens. We'll see, I suppose...

Re: Hello

You got me excited for a second!!!

Re: Hello

Sorry chime in here late.....I also think Aric's plant is Bordelon. I purchased one labeled Bordelon which was a Zebrina, and later got real Bordelon from Sandy. Both are nice, but Zebrina isn't hardy at all (for me), and Bordelon does fine here with no protection.
