![]() Hello,
My name is Santosh and I come from India. I was born and raised in Mumbai, India but, my forefathers come from the state of Kerala where we used to have a lot of coconut and banana trees in our backyard. I live in state of Georgia, USA now and I am looking to grow some banana plants in our backyard. I have heard that the viente cohol banana plant grows well and bears fruit in Georgia and would love to hear about people's experience growing them in the state of Georgia. Thank you for having me on this forum! Regards Santosh |

![]() I like Veinte Cohol's, I've fruited it several years once in S. Arkansas and a very large bunch.. I like the flavor of the Banana's since they are more fruity. I don't keep them in the ground over the winter or I wouldn't have any.. Welcome & Good Luck.. :^)

![]() Check some of my old threads on mine. They fruit every year and I do keep them in ground. I just throw a plastic feed bag or something similar to keep them dry over our wet winter! Any AA types like VC hate being cold and damp! Last year I had 3 short cycle types fruit. VC, Patupi, and Iholena Tigua.
That’s the only 3 short cycle types i have had success with here in 8b. I’m a little over an hour south of Abnshrek!

![]() Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! Tytaylor77 your collection of pictures look great! I apologize if I am asking a question that has probably been asked a million times in this forum, but what variety of banana plants can survive and bear fruit in north of georgia? Reading online it looks like musa viente cohol grows the best and can bear fruits in 3-4 months. I am looking forward to growing some bananas this year - any advice on where I can buy some pups to grow them? Please do provide me with your advice / suggestions/ links.
Thanking you in advance! Regards to all Santosh |

![]() Thank you Santosh!
Honestly any banana north of Georgia will take work! Veinte Cohol fruit here in my zone 8b in a single season! That’s coming up from a pup and ripe fruit before first frost! Everyone doesn’t have the same success. So far the only 3 I have grown in a single season is the VC, Patupi, and Iholena “Tigua” in that order. I’m working on more but haven’t be successful yet! This winter was insane! 16f was the low! I lost every single pstem. They will pup back up but that will mess up a lot of my fruiters. Since any other type I grow here takes over 1 season to get fruit. You can try VC! They HATE cold and will grow very slow in it. I would recommend keeping potted pups over winter inside or in a greenhouse timed out where they get planted as 3-4’ pups into the ground. It will give you a jump start. Along with pruning right after flowering will speed filling of the ones left. Just starting I would start slow! Don’t buy expensive variegated plants! Just get a dwarf Orinoco or Raja Puri and maybe a VC. After you have some experience with them you can move into the more rare and expensive ones if you wish. Big difference between loosing a $15 plant vs a $150 plant! Most will confirm growing banana plants is much different from any other plant you have grown! Especially for us zone pushers! Anyone can grow them in the tropics! Good luck and PM me anytime. I’m happy to help and share details of my methods. Not sure when I will have pups available because of the winter but I sell common pups for $10.
