Hello!

Hello all, this is actually my second post... I forgot to introduce myself first! My name is Nick and I live in Virginia. I am crazy about most plants but the Musa basjoo is what got me into banana plants in the first place. I discovered how cold hardy they were and decided I had to have one. I bought 2 4" potted basjoos online but that was not enough for me. I then bought 2 large ones for $45 apiece from a nursery and later 6 medium sized ones for $100 total. My good friend at another nursery gave me over 150 (not even exaggerating) and it's safe to say I finally have enough. I also have 1 zebrina and a dwarf cavendish that grew a ton this summer. And I also received a musa aeae in the mail today as well.. I made a thread about it under Ornamental but I am not quite sure it submitted.

I also love pretty much all plants.. I have quite the collection at home; I am in college now and have 19 different species in the dorm.. my roommate thinks it's awesome but I think I may be becoming a plant hoarder (lol). I have a ton of cold hardy plants at home alone with some really cool zone 6a palms, yuccas, and 1 type of agave that can withstand that as well. I also have 5 super rare plants.. the dracaena draco, dracaena cinnibari, opuntia echios var echios, opuntia Galapagea var galapagea, and as of today, the Musa Aeae.

Anything else you want to know, I'd be happy to discuss it. Here is a picture of what I planted around the pool and also 100/150 of the basjoos I acquired this summer. Enjoy.

*edit*

the plant is not musa aeae it's most likely some form of thai variegated banana plant (i was mislead by the picture on best price plants.com.. it showed a picture of a young aeae... it is still a cool plant though)

Very nice man! In 2 years you will have 1,000+ basjoo lmao. Any plans for them? In zone 8 now you need 300 Dwarf Orinoco!! Lol.

I started with 1...... 4 years later I have 200+ in ground and close to 100 different varieties! You in 4 years! That’s dangerous lol.

Welcome! You will fit in great!

Re: Hello!

that's hilarious.. my favorite part about it is that out of every single banana i could have chosen to have a million of, it was the one that doesn't produce fruit lmao the most useless one. not like it matters since they need to be overwintered but still.. pretty amusing

call me crazy but i would actually love to have some orinoco as well; i have heard they grow faster than basjoo so they are larger before the first frost.. not sure if that's true or not.

at first i put them on that hill because for years and years the only stuff that grew there were a bunch of tall ass weeds that were impossible to cut with the lawn mower since it's like a 75 degree slope. and i would almost break my ankles trying to weedeat on it. my solution was to block out all of the weeds' sunlight.. that and also because i also obtained 100+ basjoos that i desperately needed a place for haha

i may eventually sell a ton of them and use that hill as a sort of nursery.. hopefully i can at least sell enough to make the money back i wasted on the first 10.. this is my first year growing them and i had no idea how quickly they grew or how many times they multiply. I have separated no less that 15 off that basjoo in my profile picture this summer.

also does anyone know a good picture website instead of photobucket? they keep making my pictures unviewable

Check out Flickr.
Many of us use this hosting site.
It is somewhat easy to set up and use.
And your photos will not be "all jacked up" when you post them.

Thank you so much! Before I became a member I would get so frustrated when I couldn't see pictures on various threads. Also, photobucket charges $400 for a 1 year membership.. that's absurd

Not sure how many photos you have, but wow that $400 service is ridiculous. Oddly enough I started a thread on this same topic. I've looked at Flickr, PB (currently use), Google and a few others. None offer all the things I really want but I think I'm going to go with Google, just because it has a lot of automatic functions (face identification, rotating pics when it thinks it needs it, doesn't duplicate photos if you upload the same one, ...)

Re: Hello!

Thank you all!

@MusaZombie I went with Flickr because I do not post a lot and they seem to be pretty cool with using their photos on public forums. I hope Google has been working for you. Also I could give you names of all the plants around the pool (Zone 6a+) if you would like! Obviously you already recognize the basjoos.. hahaha

Also everyone I promise you all there will be more posts from me once it warms up and stuff starts growing again! Right now everything is "sleeping" haha

Re: Hello!

tallest basjoo (in the middle of 5) has a pseudo of 8-9 feet and leaves reaching over 13 feet tall. winterized.. these things are hardy behemoths! IMG_20180823_212827
IMG_20180823_194018
the cactus in the pic is 5.5 feet for reference haha
they're incredibly difficult to measure now so i used a 12ft pole-cutter/saw as my reference.. even fully extended, it does not reach the 2nd tallest top leaf by about a foot. the newest leaf is even taller. need a 12 foot ladder to measure them now haha

they have grown this much just from 10/10/10 fertilizer 2 lb per month and have only received rainwater and occasional garden hose waterings. they were winterized outdoors last year (1st year they were planted).. still have over 2 months to grow :)
