Re: Hello

So, what brought you here? Do you have bananas already, or are you looking to get into growing some?

Re: Hello

Actually was trying to find out what species of banana plant I had, did a search and the banana wiki page showed up so I joined. Have a lot of different plants I grow, grew 2 snow bananas from seeds this year! Have a lot of different kinds, tangerines from seeds, orange from cutling, kinda a hobby and I enjoy a challenge of growing things that aren't from around here! Going to trade with a buddy who has Basoo's here shortly and look to add on to the collection. Even thought about some bamboo this upcoming season. Great site btw!

Hi Brent, welcome to the org.
Glad to hear you are getting a Basjoo, great plant. For later you might consider Orinoco as well. Very tough plant.
I tried bambo but it is a little invasive. Got rid of it. Now I am trying Sugar Cane that came from a member here.
Good luck!

Re: Hello

I have Orinoco's now, had them for about 5 years now, didn't know the species until I planted some in the ground this year and one flowered/fruited. I started looking around to figure out what species and found this page. Have you ever winterized them? I'm in zone 6 and I'm going to try it this year, have a few plans on what I'm going to do.

Re: Hello

Last year all my plants were in pots, so I just wheeled them into the garage. I have heard, especially with the Orinoco, that you can bare root it. So basically you cut all the leaves off, dig it up knock the dirt off, and place it somewhere that it will not freeze. Some people I use the crawl space under there house. Some use a back bedroom. Like I said, the Orinoco is tough. Other bananas will not store well this way.
