Default Happily retired in Central Texas

New member here and a recent transplant to Central Texas from a chilly Zone 4 Nebraska. Though I grew up in Florida, I'm a total newbie when it comes to banana cultivation. I don't even know where to buy the plants locally so I'm going to pour over the threads and see what I can learn.

Welcome to the org. Yes,pour over the threads, learn as much as you can. Then if you have specific questions, or don't understand why something is done a certain way, just ask.
When I came to the org, I came for the same reason, to learn. I got so much more than that. I have made friends all over the world. Some very good friends scattered across the U.S. that I talk to regularly.
As far as local plants go, there are many members in your area that might at some point have extra plants that you could make a deal on. They will see your thread and reply to it.
So visit often, stay involved, and feel at home here. Again welcome!

Hi!!!! I'm in East Texas. Check craigslist!!!! There's a guy in Houston who grows them and sells them on a nursery size basis. There's also people who post them for free if you will come dig them up. I got my first banana plant at the local Master Gardener's Fall sale. Wish it'd come with some info. *facepalm* It got water logged and died back, but it's growing back out now.

Howdy! My wife and I go to the VA in Temple fairly often. We live in the Lake Somerville area (8B). I have a Raja Puri in the ground which is making bananas right now. (I had to wrap it for winter.) Your location might require growing in a pot and bringing into a greenhouse etc or wrapping the p-stem for winter. Check out Catalog of banana trees and banana plants offered at Going Bananas Try a dwarf Orinoco or Raja Puri. Maybe we can swap someday.
