can bananas be successfully grown 200 klm south of sydney?postcode area 2540
if so what kind?
also because the soil is hard clay can they be grown on a mound?

Welcome to the org! I'm not sure of your specifics, but soil can always be amended with compost, sand or other items to improve its drainage, pH or nutrient level for growth of particular plants. Bananas like lots of nutrients to feed off and good drainage. I don't particularly know what the climate is there, but you can grow bananas most anywhere...cooler places are just more difficult with winter (digging things up and overwintering, etc). I don't see why not. In NSW they'll need a bit of winter protection - look for previous threads on winterizing for ideas. As Bryan suggests, you'll also want to amend your soils a bit.

If you're just after the look of bananas, I'd suggest Musa basjoo as an excellent starter plant. If you also want fruit, 'Dwarf Cavendish' is a great choice, as are 'Orinoco' and 'Ice Cream.' Check your local nurseries, because there are definitely issues with shipping live plants from overseas to Oz.

In Short yes what sort There are several edible Bananas you can grow.
Just Like me Here 300 km south of you in postcode 2549 It just takes a bit longer in our climate for fruiting around 18 months minimum.
I am growing Dwarf Cavendish dwarf red dacca Cavendish goldfinger ladyfinger Ducasse Pisang calang Valery Blue Java & Rajupuri.
I have my banana plants stratecily placed in between a 6 foot high coulourbond boundry fence and 3m away a 4m high Coulorbond Shed Therefore giving the plants shelter up to 6 ft heigh.
However all plants had their highest leaves shreded by our severe windstorm on Anzac day Hopefuly this wont slow them down much.
My Most developed plants are 2 dwarf red daccas that were first put in the ground last winter both about 4m high to leaf top.
as far as your clay soil goes dig a larger than required hole say 1m round and deep and add heaps of compost or top soil if you can get some.
If you like I could sell you some suckers for $5.00 each plus postage.
Also there is a person up your area selling dwarf suckers on gumtree for $10 each.

Suckers available if you are intrested are Valery Dwarf red dacca Cavendish and Pisang Calang.

I've just started growing bananas in Narooma - protected from the southerlies by the north facing slope only. lots of people around here grow lady fingers successfully with just a lot of mulch and water
