Default Greetings from Santa Monica

I am a 6-year member of CRFG (West LA and LA Chapters) and a fruit/vegetable grower for about 45 years; but am totally new to bananas. Mostly jumping in because my younger son's girlfriend is obsessed with Gros Michel and I am trying to please her by growing some. Just trying to figure out where I'll have the room. Fortunately the little starts I hope to order from Larry won't need to go into the ground for a year. I think my babaco papaya will have to go, if anyone wants it.

Proof that old dogs like me can be taught new tricks. Ancient Yankee gardener feeling her way around in FL and loving it! Bananas are pretty easy to grow if you know how to garden; getting fruit isn't something I've yet experienced. Adding your location to your profile (don't even bother playing with that map) will let members in your area know you're their neighbor in your subsequent posts. Which you will be making...

Thanks, Kat. I'm a transplanted Yankee myself. Some of those 45 years were in northern Vermont (wasn't growing any bananas there!)

And thanks for the recommendation about the map. I'll check it out. I know for a fact a fellow-CRFGer is growing bananas walking distance from me, but in an ocean adjacent canyon, so different microclimate..

I think you misunderstood; the map didn't work for me so I just added my location to my profile as others have on theirs. Vermont? Dad's family farmed for over 200 years in West Hoosick, NY which is not far from Bennington. Brrr.. I spent most of my life just outside of DC. Not as cold...

I was definitely "booming" myself, but in Brooklyn. Transplanted (corms and all) almost 50 years ago to SoCal
