Greetings and Salutations

Hello! I live in the US, southern New Mexico, just outside of a little town called Mayhill. It's high up in the mountains, where the difference between USDA Zones 6 and 7 depends entirely on what the weather decides to do in a given year. As such, naturally, my banana experiments have been container-bound, but still. I don't remember when I started trying to grow bananas from seed, but I do know my first experiment was with Musa sikkimensis; naturally, this got me pretty discouraged pretty quickly. This year however, in addition to trying new varieties (Ensete glaucum, Ensete ventricosum, Ensete lasiocarpum / Musella lasiocarpa), I also tried a few new techniques, including thus far my most successful method, the "Gladware container" method. Most of the seedlings ended up dying when I had to travel for 10 days (being out in the mountains, there aren't very many people I can ask to water my plants while I'm gone), but a few have survived and the initial success rate has me more confident in trying my hand with these same varieties and more.

All that having been said, hello!

Welcome to the board.

Yeah, you live in an odd area. The first time I went through Cloudcroft, I was amazed to see Douglas firs and a ski area. Within ten minutes, I was down into Alamagordo. I'm assuming you're in a similar situation, although I'm not familiar with Mayhill.

Mayhill's on the opposite side of Cloudcroft from Alamogordo, about the same distance away; yeah, we're surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest: Douglas firs, ponderosa pines, and alligator junipers everywhere. We don't have quite the same microclimate as Cloudcroft itself, but it's pretty similar.

Ah, I know exactly where you are now. I came through there on my way from Artesia to LC. I remember all the junipers set against the yellow grass. Nice area.

The grass actually does turn green for about four months! Assuming we've had enough rain during the monsoons in a given year. :P Actually, it's really lovely when the fields down in James Canyon (the valley the highway runs through) erupt in wildflowers. Lots of yellow and lavender blooms!

I'll bet! I've been fortunate enough to visit every state except Hawaii, and I remember most of the places I've been just as vividly as though it were yesterday.
