Said "Welcome to Bananas" 0 Times | Greetings, I am new and I love bananas! I have my first banana tree which may produce bananas this year. The bloom is opening and there are hands showing. I am excited to find this forum to discuss raising bananas.

Please update your profile with your location. Hopefully you have warm winters and your banana fruits will have sufficient time to fill in and ripen. Do you know what variety you have? |

Said "Welcome to Bananas" 0 Times | Re: Greetings, I am new and I love bananas! I do not know what variety I have, sorry. Somebody dug them up and gave them to me. I do have three plants that I purchased, these three plants do not grow as tall so I was told I would have a better chance of getting bananas from the short ones. But it is the tall ones making fruit. Our winter was really mild last winter, the main stalk did not get killed back. The new growth this spring came out a little higher than head high.

Tom, I cannot tell where you live from the map option; I don't have the time to click on over 2700 "dots" and doubt others do also. Putting the information in your profile helps members near to you give you better advice and, who knows, maybe a pup and a beer if you strike up a conversation and more. (No, I haven't experienced such as of yet but hope to do so one day.) BTW, welcome and congrats on your flowering/fruiting banana plant. Post pictures. We love pictures!

Said "Welcome to Bananas" 295 Times | Re: Greetings, I am new and I love bananas! He's in the Tuskaloosa area... Odds are your shorter ones are dwarf Cavendish. If so, they won't survive winter there as they are very cold sensitive. You will need to bring them in for the winter. As for the others, my money's on Orinoco. Pics would help a lot in that regard.

What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more. |

Because of my last name, people inadvertently call me Tom, so most of my characters are usually called Tom because I already answer to it, LOL.
