Thank you so much.
My name is Irenee,I live in Rwanda(East Africa).
As first concern,I'd love to know, with your experience, what you can recommend me to do.
I have a 4 hectare banana plantation, and I can see I'll be having my first harvest around October.
So my problem is about plastic bags. While I was elabolating my project,I was thinking.of using.them, but now it is not easy to find a good quality of them here, and in our country it is not allowed to import plastic stuff,So I want an advice.
Is it really necessary to use plastic bags to cover bananas?
What happens if I don't use them?
How high or low can the production be,if I use them, and how can it be if I don't use them?
Thank you again so much

To be honest I believe the plastic bags are just to keep them safe from any bugs that might try to eat them or lay eggs on them. I have grown bananas for forty years and never used a bag and never had 1 problem what so ever./
But I will say, I have never grown four hectares of bananas either.......

Are there any local farmers you could ask? Farmers are not gardeners IME because they hate competition but 4 hectares is not a huge plot--enviable amount of land but not huge--you would never make a huge impact on the total crop sold. Gardeners are very open to sharing--see if you can find someone there who can give you better advice about your specific needs. Is there a government agency there to help with your crops? We have many in the USA and there are groups in other countries that want to assist growers.

If not, I bumped your thread in case a member knows more than I do.

Hello again.
Thanks for all your help.In fact I thaught of using these plastic bags, because its a new thing around here.I am sure the nearest area these plastic bags are used can be like Cameroon and Gabon. In Rwanda,we have government institutions and agencies helping farmers mainly on the technical side. So,I know they can help in theory. But I was looking for an answer from an experienced person(like Kubali).I'll keep looking for.help, but I guess in a few days I'll have a decision.
I thank you again,so much
