![]() My wife and I are addicted Hoosier banana growers. Our problem started when we saw a tropical banana at a garden center in southern Indiana. We brought it back to Indianapolis where it grew remarkably well. This plant was wintered over in our home, a local hospital office, and a garage with a ploycarbomate roof owned by another Indiana banana enthusiast.
Last year, the plant's third, we realized in August that the plant was producing a stalk of bananas. We, and everyone who saw it, were amazed to see the rapid formation of the fruits. We have several mats now and have for the first time successfully wintered over three hardy mats. Our most recent interest is a Siam Ruby we purchased this spring here in Indianapolis. This plant seems to be barely making it but has produced two pups so far so we hope we can salvage something for next year. We grow other tropical plants and added what most would call a sunroom this year to help us winter over our favorites. This insanity began with the realization, after a magical trip to Hawaii, that we would never be able to actually live in Hawaii but missed the beauty of Kauii terribly. We began to surround our patio with tropicals, began to try to winter them over ....... and you eventually wind up with a room addition!!! Actually having a banana plant produce a stalk was probably the apex of our gardening experiences and we've been gardeners a long time. I found Bananas.org in a Google search fro Siam Ruby, hoping to heard from someone who may be able to give us some hints on this variety, new to us. Look forward to hearing from other enthusiasts! |
