Default Doctor

Hi
I'm a Plastic Surgeon by occupation and try to manage a 50 acres piece of Agri land as well. Started growing bananas earlier this year by starting with a single acre orchard. Intend expanding it to 20 acres if I get a good response. Main problem appears to be extreme climate here in Lahore, Pakistan together with lots of frost in early January.
Any suggestions !

Hi if your periods of frost in january are few you could always set up burn barrels in between your rows of bananas and burn wood in these barrels at night to try and keep the frost away,,kinda like what they do in california with the orange orchards to keep the frost and cold away,,,other things you can do to keep the frost away is at night keep misting the plants down to keep away the frost,,the misting works good we used to do it to our roses in spring at the nursery I worked at to keep the frost away at night in the begiining of spring!! Hope this was of some help_Jason. (Water is about 50-55 degrees and thats what keeps your plants warm is the 50 some degree water)

Welcome aboard!

I am surprised they are using the "acres" unit of measurement there in Pakistan. Is that the local unit of measurement or you did some conversion for us?
Regardless, happy to have you join.
Your dilemma is a rather large dilemma, hope you find some good solutions. What type of banana plant are you testing with now?

Jason,

Smudge pots have been discontinued for some time in California. The eco-Nazis have forced other freeze treatments. Wind machines, and misting both of which require either fossil fuels to move the wind or the use of precious water to coat leaves and fruit with rime to prevent freezing.

No burning to warm the air around here for a very long time.

Not to mention the loss of life and limb from smudge pots.
