Default Calin in Romania

Hello everyone.

My name is Calin. Male. 33 yo.

Not sure if you've had any other Romanian members... well, we are in the SE Europe with a temperate climate - gets freezing cold in winters and quite hot in summers - around 30-35 Celsius.

I am here as I have a passion for plants, especially for exotic plants that no one else has them.

This is quite a challenge since I live in a small apartment with windows facing north I think - so I get some sun mainly in the mornings. Also winters are quite cold and dark - sun sets around 4 pm... and then... u get many hours of dark.

Among my plants... I have a ceiling high dragon fruit plant, well... hasn't flowered yet... and a passion fruit vine, a banana passiflora, two plumerias - about 1-1,5 m high (hasn't flowered either - yet) ... two yellow oleanders (got the big triangle shaped nuts from Indonesia), small desert rose (adenium I think), a queen of the night (epyphyllum oxypetallum - i think, not sure about the "y"s that I hope will bloom one of these summer nights!) and a few others...

I promised myself I would not get more plants - I already have over 30 pots - as it gets hard in winter to provide enough light and proper conditions, in general.

But you know... you see something.. and you always want more.

I saw one post here on bananas about the GREEN JADE VINE... and well... I'd really like to have one. I know I am in Romania and it will be difficult to send me a life plant from someone who lives in a place where it thrives - but a few fresh seeds that I could start to germinate here I think would be perfect.

Right now I don't have much to offer in exchange. But when the summer ends... I will hopefully have some seeds to trade, mainly of garden flower seeds.

Please someone... let me know if you have this... or anything really exotic and that doesnt grow to huge sizes.

Thanks again!

CALIN

PS I am here to answer any of your questions or if you want to know me better
It's always good to make new friends!

Welcome aboard Calin! Make yourself at home!

Regarding the Jade Vine, we have a member here who has gotten his to set seed, his name is Jordon and his username here is JNSTropic. He lives in South Florida. His Jade Vine finally set seed, something like after 30 or 40 years (I forget the exact number). fwiw, I would consider him a Master Expert Gardener. I guess seed is not common from this vine (or perhaps not when in our climate). I was lucky enough to obtain a seedling from him maybe about a year ago or so and its doing fine. Jordon frequently redesigns his website, but at the moment, you can see he is showing pictures of his Jade vine blooming on his flower pictures from May, 2008 page - Flowers of May 08
Not sure how long the picture will last on his site, so it may disappear from here at any time, but here you go take a look at it:

Fertilizer? Let's just say I've been investigated by the Department of Homeland Security due to satellite imagery readings that indicate there is an unusually high concentration of nitrates in the vicinity which in such levels is usually only linked to terrorist fertilizer-bomb factories.

Oh, and when they left, all they said was, "hey, nice banana trees. But, why aren't there any bananas on them?"

Any more questions?

Hi Calin and welcome! I'm sure we've all been there about having too many plants in a small area. Unfortunately we never listen too ourselves about not getting more!

Hi Calin,
It seems that we have this affliction in common! I also enjoy collecting exotic plants. I got a Jade vine about a month ago. It promptly dropped all of its leaves, but I am hopeful that it will sprout new leaves once it recovers from shipping shock. The vine is healthy and once I get it growing again, I will offer some cuttings. This may take some time, but check back with me in 6 months.

Glad to welcome you as a fellow plant fanatic!

Default Thank you guys!

Hello everyone...

Thanks Stumpy, Banana Junkie, Tally man, Kurt, Scot and all others who welcomed me.

Nice to be here.

True... we never listen, and we always make "room" for one more, and another one more.... I will soon take some pics with what I have at home. Hope you like them.

WELL...looks like this jade vine is a real hard one... not sure it will feel at home in the temperate climate over here... but I STILL WANT IT!

If any of you live in an exotic area ... where exotic for you is weeds ( ) then try to remember me when you see seeds !

Thanks,

Calin

Hiya Re: Calin in Romania

Hey Calin, I looked at Logee's online and they have the jade vine, but you'd have to order 300.00 dollars worth in order for them to send it so I really do not think it is a good idea. I'll try looking on Dave's Garden site.

Default bananas?

Well, thanks for all your messages... i think i should give up on the jade vine... sounds like it would be just disappointing here in this climate.... grow slowly if at all, never bloom... so what's the point.

I think I should try some bananas?

LOL

i dont know how your winters are there, but you could try high color mini musa ( in the house potted up), super dwarf cavadish, dwarf cavadish, basjoos, ornatas, lil prince, and a bunch of others that might do well in the house.

Hi Calin,
I see you are in zone 6, this means that you can't grow much bananas outside.
musa basjoo will survive (the corm) but I think its impossible to grow other species outside. maybe you can try musa velutina(like mskitty said), sikkemensis or a musella lasiocarpa.
for dwarf ones in pot you can use musa zebrina, or just the musas that you can buy at your shop/gardencentre.

for which species are you looking? maybe i can find a site which ships to romania.
on this site they sell basjoo, basjoo 'Sakhalin' (larger and growing faster) musa sikkemensis and musella.

Jarred has my Jade Vine a little mixed up. It is 9 or 10 years old. I had my first one die after 10 years - fungus killed it due to the shade of a poinciana. The man that first had success in south Florida had them die all the time. He propagated them and always had a few growing in his trees.
My site has the current month and one month past of the plants from my garden. Then there are all sorts of albums and special pages that are permanent. I was concerned that people would miss the older months so I started to make movie clips. If you go to my site (default.aspx and go to the movie clip page) you will see some more pictures of my Jade Vine.
You should try orchids. They can be shipped all over the world and have something for everyone. When I started to grow orchids in 1945, my first ones were native orchids that I found up in oak trees. You said that your plumeria hasn't flowered yet. I have had a small one bloom. I like mine better when the get really tall, not too good in the house.
