Default Best Southern California Banana Varieties?

Hello Banana Buddies,

I'd like to learn which banana varieties grow best in my Zone 9 Huntington Beach area.

We have great success with avocados, loquat, apple, grapefruit (Oro Blanco, which is suited to this area.

I'll do my homework on when and how to best cultivate bananas but if you have any helpful uncommon tips, that would be welcome too.

Thank you! Robin

About a hundred. It really comes down to what size plants, size fruits, and flavors of fruit you want.

Any green type will grow best for you. Reds will grow but are more cold sensitive so should we get a little frost all the leaves turn brown leaving an ugly plant until it starts growing again in spring.

Go visit Jon in San Diego where you can taste some and see them as mature plants. Then you'll have some info to base your decisions on.

Welcome Robin...Good to have you growing with us!!

I have just ventured into growing an avocado AND a loquat...they are small - any advice would be appreciated!!

I am in Zone 8a, Central Texas, and having awesome growth & success with Dwarf Red, Dw. Namwah & Dw. Orinoco.
I am a first year banana grower though & will not have fruit or flower 'til next year.

Glad to have you with us Robin!! ~Cheryl

I live in rainbow, ca in the hills. Orinoco and raja puri have fruited for me. I have purchased 5 more varieties we will see.

I now have Williams, dwarf Cavendish, dwarf brazillian, goldfinger, gran nain, gros michel...also misi luki.

I have my dwarf orinoco, Rajapuri, and misi luki out in the open this year.

I use to have the Rajapuri and DO by the house....I am hoping that they all do more than survive. ..
I live in 10a
