Default Bananas to you, from JERICO!

Hey Everyone!!!

Mediahound gave us a big-o welcome, and we're here to say thanks!

We are from Alabama, and we have no bananas today.

BUT, we do have two banana's blooming. One looks rather sad, but the other holds potential.

We will send pictures. Don't know what kind, but they are rather huge.

Then we ordered another 13 different varieties. We don't have the entire list, but we do have: Cavendish, Williams, Ice Cream, Raja Puri, Gran Nain, Thousand Finger, Mus Double Mahoi. Mekong Giant, Musa Basjoo, Musa Ensete Snow Banana, Musa Viente Cohol, Musa Saba, FHIA-3 Sweetheart, and then we have a bunch of the kind that is blooming.

We are looking for any information we can get our hands on to determine what we need to do. We've only done a quick scan of the forum so far. We'll have to go back and do a whole lotta reading.

Then maybe we can really dig in here.

We know right where your town is. We delivered a load there a few years ago, just South of the Pilot. We just closed our trucking company two weeks ago.

Welcome to Bananas and Zone Pushing!

That's an ambitious list but not impossible. Y'all are near Tuskegee right? It does get a bit cold there. Definitely going to need Winter protection. Good for you there is a ton of information here on the forum. Just run some searches, you'll see.

Hope you can come down to our Banana get together. Bring friends!

Rebel,

Sure are glad we closed our operation down. We had enough of things the way they have gotten. We have been out there for far too many years.

Trucking sure takes its toll on a body.

Just 2 weeks off, and we are feeling much better. Now it is time for us to enjoy life. Working with plants and the soil are just what the good Lord has ordered for us.

Thankfully we were able to drive home, park the truck in the yard, get out, and we are still able to enjoy life.

Believe us, we ain't looking back!

Welcome! Always happy to see more zone pushers

Are your blooming ones in pots or greenhouses? With fall approaching and banana fruit ripening times rather long and slow, I'd highly recommend you get them safe before they fail.

Illia,

Our blooming bananas are in thee ground. We can't tell you what kind of bananas are that is blooming, but the trunk (pseudostem) is huge.

This is the second year they have been in the ground. The first one bloomed on a smaller plant that looked like it was almost gone. We didn't expect those bananas would make it.

However, the one in bloom now, it is way to huge to move inside. If the bananas make good, if not maybe we can learn some kind of tricks to help us out for the next bloom.

I'll try to get pictures of it later today or tomorrow morning.

But thanks again to you (and everyone else) for the gran nain welcome!

If you feel determined and crazy enough, you could try building a quick little temporary greenhouse over it for the winter so you can possibly get fruit. Get a wood frame going on the bottom, perhaps some PVC hoops, some clear plastic over top, and for extra insulation, some people even use a second layer of plastic or a good layer of bubble wrap. Also christmas lights are a good heat emitter, and a tank such as an aquarium of water helps soak heat by day and release it by night.

Illia, we appreciate that info! We'll have to try it on the plant that is flowering.

We are going to watch the progress to see where the bananas get to before the temperature starts to cool, then we'll proceed from there.

When we purchased our other plants (those listed below in signature), they showed that they were more cold tolerant than some other varieties (except the Thousand Finger). So if they told the truth, most of them will at least survive our winter.

We do intend to offer them as much protection as possible though.

Always feel your advise is welcome here, we want to do what is right for the plants we have.

We are not too far behind you. We are sixty, both husband and wife. Hubby been in trucking for somewhere over 35 years. I've been in trucking for 17 years. I pulled flatbed for two years by myself. He was in HazMat tanking. When we got together we formed a great team, pulled HazMat still for another 2 years. When we decided to open our company, we decided to go flatbed.

We ran the first company for 9 years, then closed that one & started another to try to be more in compliance with CSA. We ran that one for 4 years.

Just thank God we are out of that now. We actually closed it in July 16th, almost a month now. Time has passed rather quickly, and I sure would not want to go back to it!

Now we have got so much to get caught up on around here.

We want to open a nursery, my heart lies in tropical type plants. We have quite a large collection of our stock plants. Next comes: making all the baby plants for market.

We are also getting ready to start offering organic fertilizer. Right now we are still in the beginning stages. We are waiting for guaranteed analysis from the State Lab. (It should be back around the week-end.) Then we'll begin our packaging system.

Here's that one the neighbor has. Travis and I mentioned, after first light frost, cuts all leaves off and also the top and then wraps in plastic for the Winter. I like that Christmas tree light idea. Like that a lot. Thanks for sharing that Ellia.[IMG][/IMG]
Keep in mind,,his deck in the background is about 3 feet off the ground in the background and with Bananas.

If you'll notice,,to the left is one even taller.

Thousand Fingers is extremely cold tolerant, the issue is in the fruit. The plant loves lots of heat, but more importantly, the many many fruits take a long, long time to develop. We're talking much over 8 months, possibly over a year. The main hardiness of the plant though is the corm, so, you cannot hope that the p-stem and fruit are hardy.

Wow! There is so much to learn!

That is why we joined here. This place is bountiful with information.

After making the investment if the plants, and the time to get them this far; we want to do everything we can to protect them.

Our landscape will look quite strange with all the plastic wrapped trees we'll have!

You sure you retired? Sounds like you are still working! LOL But I'm sure it is fun now.

Both of you are right around my age. I'm 56 and close to retiring although everytime Congress agrees on something and passes new legislation I see my retirement circling the toilet bowl.

The knowledge here is phenominal. You should find answers to any question you come up with.

Strange?

Yeah I guess so! This was the Winter protection for the Winter of 10/11

And after unwrapping and growing a little on June 2
