Joy banana tree

Hi everybody,Kathi here.Mom had recieved a pup 2 years ago and yes her tree is 12 feet tall and is on her second batch pf bananas.Mom bought her 1st batch in the house before they were ripe because of the weather her in F.L. east coast was cold that winter.Now she has anothe crop with 29 on it started in 1st week of June I think.Im hearing they have to stay on for 5 months.I wanted to now if that was true.I dont want my parents to loose this bunch.Any advice would be helpful thank Kathi from Edgewater fl

With 29 fruit it is probably Orinoco. There is no set amount of time they have to stay on the plant.The amount of time they take to mature depends on the climate . The warmer it is the faster they mature.Try and leave them on until you see some yellow then you can cut and hang the bunch and let them finish to ripen indoors.

does sound like an Orinoco..i have several..atleast 4 months but longer is better..my last bunch I cut a 4 months because of weather..hung for 2 months and one by one they all ripened over a 5 months time...did not lose one but the smaller ones that ripened last lost some of their flavor..but weather permitting 5-6 months is my usual time before I cut,by then there is just a tinge of yellow on the lower hands
