Banana Information- Dwarf Cavendish
Hello, I actually know nothing about growing Bananas, but I did buy a Dwarf Cavendish in the spring. I asked when I bought it whether this original mother tree would produce bananas or whether the small new trees that come out the side would produce the bananas. They said the mother tree would produce.
Well, I planted the tree in the middle of the summer, but all I have gotten are the babies trees protruding from the side. I now need to move the banana to give it more space. My question is "Do I move the mother plant or try to just move the 1 baby coming up next to it ". I don't know which produces since I have gotten nothing. I am afraid I might kill the baby if I separate the 2 pieces. "Will this entire tree die back in the winter or should I cut it back. You see, I know nothing. Maybe this isn't a good time to move it. It is 80 degrees outside right now. Thanks in advance for all the help. |

Re: Banana Information- Dwarf Cavendish
You can dig the babies out and replant them elsewhere, but leave the main plant where it is. There are plenty of posts here about how to remove a "sucker" or "pup" as most members call them. Generally with my dwarf cavendish I wait for the pups to be somewhere between 1 and 2 feet tall before I dig them out.
As for your mother plant, depending on how large/old it was when you got it, you probably won't see any signs of fruit until almost one year. My first two DCs (dwarf cavendish) flowered and fruited in 10 - 12 months, but they were probably a few months old when I planted them. Once the mother plant fruits and the fruit is harvested, it will die. For this reason most people will leave one or two of the suckers (baby plants) when it gets close to fruiting so that one of those plants will grow up and take the place of the mother once dead. For now, just move those babies somewhere else to expand your garden! This forum is full of great information, so just keep poking around and you'll find plenty of useful posts. If you're like most of the members here you'll be obsessed with bananas in a few months and will have many new plants I hope this helps! |

Re: Banana Information- Dwarf Cavendish
Hehe! A spur of the moment DC purchase got me here to learn so even if they're the "bottom of the barrel" bananas to grow, it's all good. Enjoy. Watch and learn. Read a lot. Ask stupid questions; someone will answer you in some form--seriously or kidding.
I'm assuming you're a woman from your handle. If not, sorry for that. If so, we need more XXers here to balance the guys who are into racing and posting weird pictures which, though funny, confuse this "lacking the Y chrom person" many times. Welcome!
