Default artemis_sssf

Thank you for including me in your bananas forum. I live in Sydney Australia and have been interested in bananas for a while. I have two different species growing in my garden, both have produced fruit over the past 10 years or so. I didnt realise how many different species of bananas there are in the world. I would like to know more about how to protect my plants from the wind and to get them to bear fruit successfully each time. There always seem to be tragedies happening to my plants. The wind, the local fruit bats or possums - theres always some reason I dont get to eat or share them all with family or friends. When I do I realise how superior they are to shop bought bananas. I look forward to learning more about them from you guys.

Welcome! You might try growing some dwarf varieties to better handle the wind and bagging the fruit after cutting the bud to help keep the critters off.

Welcome from Live Oak, Texas! I get lots of wind here too, so I have my nanas next to the fence. Of course, there are storms that blow through and tear the leaves, but they just seem to shake it off and grow some more.

Wow I didnt expect so many nana lovers to come out and say hi to me. Thank you all very much for your warm welcome. Great to see so many from all over the world too.
I appreciated your suggestions too about how to protect from wind. And share many of your experiences with having the leaves torn by the wind.
Shall dig out some pics Ive taken over the years. I think the flowers are really pretty and am always trying to take "the best" shot of those.
I do have some small bananas which grow on a medium height tree, and have them close to a fence, its been so dry lately I think I need to water them a bit and try to transfer a small one when they appear to an even more protected part of the garden.
Cant bag them cos they are too high up - even with a ladder. I think it would be cool to have some kind of bagging tool that can be used on an extension pole - does such a thing exist?
