![]() Hey All, my name is Dennis and I have a small tropical plant fetish. I am currently trying my hand at growing Coconuts. I have grown avocados from seed and pineapples too and now it is time to try my hand at bananas. I aquired some inexpensive banana seeds online(Ebay) Musa Sikkimensis Daj Giant. I am here to learn as much as you all have to offer. I will pass of the information to my family and friends. I am excited to get my little banana tree started. I ordered my seeds on December 3, and just received them in the mail today. I already prepared my area to start germinating my seeds. I live in NJ and the weather here is winter. I will be growing my plants indoors. It is over 70 degrees in my grow room.

![]() Welcome! I'm a tropical fruit addict too, and I also live in a cold climate. I'm planning to tackle coconuts as well, but since most species grow so tall, I'm waiting til this spring to ship an already sprouted dwarf on over.
Good luck, and would love to hear on how your growing goes! ![]() Oh and don't forget, you can also get already sprouted/live bananas through nurseries online too. Saves the challenge and time of trying to germinate seeds. Some nurseries offer a good handful of choices for nice cheap prices. |

![]() Illia
Is it extremely difficult to germinate them? I have the patience but if it's easier to buy them pre germinated I can go that way too. Thanks for the heads up. |

![]() I can't say from personal experience honestly, I just know it's not as easy as germinating anything else I've tried. But, yes, you can get nearly any species as a young plant from various nurseries online that ship. And just about all of them sell cold hardy ornamentals like M. sikkimensis and M. basjoo. They've even got somewhat cold hardy edibles too. For cheap prices I personally like Florida Hill Nursery and Wellspring Gardens. Both sell via eBay too.

![]() Of the first ten Sikkimensis we planted, 4 gerrminated. Decent amount. The next ten are now starting to germinateand have gotten 3 so far. About 10 days to the first so they show high hopes of later enjoyment. Hope they grow good as here in Florida they should look great. Good growing and post pics when you get them.
