Absolutely "green" to bananas.

Greetings. I am from north west Canada -where no banana has ever grown! I now live in Costa Rica, on the south west coast...at about 600 feet above sea level- - our house faces southwest.

I know absolutely nothing about bananas but fortunately our Tico groundsman does...however he and I can only mumble a few words of each others language so me asking him questions about my plants is like me trying to understand Steven Hawkins (sp?) -

Several years ago a house guest planted two banana plants as a gift to us. I do not know the names of the plants but ONE plant has produced one lovely bunch of small SWEET bananas - the other somewhat shaded plant has produced nothing. From the productive plant we just harvested its second bunch and hung it to ripen...many of the green bananas are very fat and are splitting open before they ripen. I am going to be interested to learn about that problem and secondly, will be trying to learn why I have one non-productive plant. And finally, I will try to learn how to have healthy, productive plants. (and my wife is thrilled to see the recipes on the site).

Gracias for allowing me to join your group.

Welcome to the group. I suggest that you should sign up for some Spanish Language classes. If you can't talk to the locals, you're missing most of the fun of living in a new culture. I just moved to Thailand, and this is what I'm doing. I also suggest that you avoid hanging around with the expat crowd; if you don't, you end up isolating yourself from the rich, warm culture around you. Those are my thoughts, for what they're worth.
