Thank you, Ed, with you around, who needs Google?

As a matter of fact none of the answers you gave me would have
been available on that search engine.

Thanks again,
Olaf

I did thank you, Tony

Even better, I was working on a reply, while you complained about my lack of
gratitude.

So here it is:

DSC00358

This is the closest palm I could find in Phu Coq and in my photos, but that is
by no means exhaustive. I do believe, however, that the picture Ed supplied
resembles mine more. Accordingly, pending further evidence, the verdict is
bamboo.

But thanks for the effort Tony,

Olaf

I know precious little about palms, bamboos or bamboo palms for that matter.
but for all it is worth I have a photo, which shows the same (kind of?) palm whole:

DSC00357

I hope that will get you all closer to a settlement between palms, bamboo and
bamboo palms

Looking at the picture now, the leaves of this palm do look kind of bamboo-like.
That appears to support Richard's ID, at least in my lay opinion, but brings us
no closer to any conclusion as to if the original pic. was from a bamboo or a palm.

Ooops, I stepped into it with Tony again, by attributing his reference to bamboo
palms in Richard Lyon's Nursery to Richard, a regular contributor here.

Thank you Tony! ...and sorry.

These are photos of bamboo palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii) flower/fruit very similar to your photo Olaf which makes me believe it's a palm. Another reason in Olaf photo the way the base of the flowering branch is attached to the trunk.

I found a thread about bamboo palm at this website palmtalk.org maybe Olaf could post his photo at palmtalk.org and if it's a palm they will be able to identify it.

Thanks Olaf and Tony for sharing

I think, Brod, That you have got it. I had never seen a palm trunk
resembling the one in the original picture and for bamboo the segments were
much too close.

But with the Chamaedorea tepejilote not only the fruit and stem colour, but
also the leaf markings on the trunk jibe.

Thank you Brod, you have solved the riddle at least to my satifaction.

I have copied the following pictures out of Chamaedorea tepejilote - Pacsoa
for comparison.
